Description: The Hindu Temple Society of North America ("Society"), a non-profit religious institution was incorporated on January 26, 1970, under the laws of the State of New York. Soon thereafter, the Society acquired from the Russian Orthodox Church a site on which the present Temple is situated. It was in this small frame house that daily rituals were performed and weekend services conducted by volunteer priests, until the present structure, designed in accordance with the Agama Sastras (scriptures relating to temple building), was completed early in 1977, and the Temple consecrated on July 4 of the same year. His Holiness Sri La Sri Padrimalai Swamigal, a great siddha from Madras, had prepared twenty-six yantras for the temple and done pujas for them for five years before installing them on July 4, 1977.

Description: Trinity Church in the financial district of Lower Manhattan in New York City is one of the oldest religious institutions in America. Though the standing church has been rebuilt three times, the roots of its congregation go back to 1696 and include numerous historical figures. The church stands a mere 200 yards from where the second plane hit the South Tower on September 11, 2001, the site known as ground zero. A new digital organ replaced the irreplaceable Skinner Pipe Organ that was destroyed as a result of the attacks allowing the concerts to continue to attest to the resiliency of the church, its congregation and Lower Manhattan.

Description: In 1847, a Jesuit priest, John Larkin, was charged with founding a church to serve the faithful in New York City. With only 50 cents and an abundance of faith, he left Fordham and headed for Manhattan – a full day’s travel at that time – beginning the great journey that led to the founding of the St. Frances Xavier Community. The new church built in 1850 soon proved inadequate so, in May 1878, with 5,000 people in attendance, the cornerstone was laid in the Chelsea neighborhood for the current magnificent church designed by the famous architect, Patrick C. Keely.

Description: Good Shepherd’s historical roots go back to the 19th century, when Roosevelt Island was Welfare Island, where all the outcast and unwanted of New York City were placed, in the two Almshouses for male and female inmates, the Municipal Lunatic Asylum, the Penitentiary and its Hospitals. Beginning around 1850, the Episcopal Church, through its Mission Society, began sending people over in rowboats from Manhattan to meet the needs of all the poor, rejected, and forgotten residents of Welfare Island. In 1872, the Church appointed The Rev. William French to be the official Chaplain to Welfare Island, but the Almshouse officials would not let him conduct services in the chapel there. A benefactor, George Bliss, stepped forward, and the noted architect Frederic Clark Withers was commissioned to design “the most beautiful church in the city for its most neglected class of humanity.” The Chapel of the Good Shepherd, the building we worship in today, was dedicated in 1889.
