Description: Politics from a moderate Democratic perspective - painting the Red State Purple. The Alabama Moderate was created by me, a stay-at-home mommy, to give me a place to voice my frustrations with the world outside. At times, that includes daily life and news items, but it usually involves politics. More specifically, it involves Alabama politics, and it’s tough being a moderate in a red state.

Description: The AlabamaTeaParty.org website is a the MOST CONSERVATIVE Blog in America. It is was begun in the early days of 2009 in response to what we saw coming with the ascendancy of liberalism in the United States. While it identifies itself with the Alabama Tea Party movement, the mission moved on to the whole country. Liberalism, anarchism, fascism, socialism, violence… These are the things of the left. Conservatives are individualists, and subscribe to only one ism, and that is conservatism. Guardians of America’s soul, we work to maintain the center even as the edges crumble around us. And if and when things go horribly wrong through the writhing and social experimentation of the progressive left, it is the men of conservative spirit and ideals that will put things to right again.

Description: Alabma poltics analyzed for your protection - The author (I) was born and educated in Indiana. My degree is in political science (with a specialization in public policy and public administration) from Purdue University (Go Boilermakers!) and I moved to Alabama right after college. After living here for a decade, I have been extremely fortunate to have spent time with and gotten to know political, community and business leaders in every part of this great state. I started The World Around You in 2003 because I wanted to have an outlet to discuss my passion. I also bring a strong background in understanding the web, data collection and analysis and thoroughly enjoy bringing that element to what I do here. I know how the state government works (and doesn’t work) and I know many of the players. We have a long way to go in creating a more open government and one that is responsive to its citizens, but I want to do what I can to help make that become reality. I’ve become extremely excited by the opportunities presented with new social media tools that are available and what that can do for candidates, officeholders and those they serve. The tools may go in and out of fashion, but the direct connection they can provide to constituents and voters will never go out of style.

Description: The Secretary of State is a constitutional office with duties that fall into four major categories, as follows: Executive: Many of the executive records have both the signatures of the secretary of state and of the governor because the secretary of state serves as the governor's personal notary public. When the secretary of state is witnessing the governor's signature, the Great Seal of Alabama is used as the "notary" seal. Included in this type of executive records are writs of arrest, contracts, deeds and leases. Other executive records include listings of abandoned vehicles found in the state, information on municipal incorporations, and the names of all notaries public registered in Alabama. Elections: The secretary of state is Alabama's "Chief Election Official". The secretary of state is given many different election duties under state law. Election records include vote totals, certified ballots and records showing how much money candidates and political committees raised and spent during an election. Copies of certificates of election, commissions, and oaths of office are also on file for many elected officials. Business Records: Business records are divided into three categories: Lands and Trademarks, Corporations, and Uniform Commercial Code (UCC). The Lands and Trademarks Section has the original state land records dating back to the days when Alabama first achieved statehood. All of the trademarks registered in the state also are found here. Corporations Section staff members reserve names of businesses that incorporate to do business in Alabama. The state has about 200,000 corporate filings, and staff members usually get about 300 requests each day for information in those files. The UCC Section maintains more than 220,000 financing statements that are filed by attorneys and banking institutions.

Like the judicial conduct organizations in every other state, the Commission's purpose is to ensure observance of the high standards of conduct that have been set for judges, both on and off the bench. The Commission prosecutes charges in the Court of the Judiciary when it finds reasonable basis to do so after investigation. Description: The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway is a connecting link between established water transportation routes that serve shippers and producers in the South and the Midwest as well as deep water ports along the eastern Gulf of Mexico. This unique feature has already benefited commercial interests in 18 states since it opened for business in 1985. The 234 - mile waterway begins at its northern end at Pickwick Lake on the Tennessee River, flows through northeast Mississippi and west Alabama, and connects with the established Warrior-Tombigbee navigation system at Demopolis, Alabama. From there, commerce travels northward as far as Port Birmingham, Alabama or south to Mobile, Alabama, and other destinations along the Gulf coast. The main features of Tenn-Tom are 10 locks and dams and a 29-mile man-made canal, one of the largest earth moving projects in history. The 10 locks raise or lower barges and boats a total of 341 feet, the difference in elevation between the two ends of the waterway. There are some 40 recreation areas that provide easy access to nearly 44,000 acres of water - related sports and other activities. In addition, marinas are located along the Tenn-Tom and connecting waterways to meet the needs of local as well as transient boaters. Over 110,000 acres of land were acquired for the construction and operation of the project. Some of these lands are available for public hunting. Also, another 88,000 acres, mostly bottomland hardwoods, have been purchased from voluntary sellers and managed by the two state conservation agencies for wildlife habitat. After 12 years of construction, the waterway opened to commercial traffic in January 1985. Seventeen public ports and terminals are strategically located within the waterway corridor to serve shippers' needs.
