Heather Slania of the National Museum of Women in the Arts presents “Dynamic Content: Archiving Women in the Arts”.

On November 18th, over 60 attendees met at the annual Archive-It Partner Meeting. This year the meeting was in Montgomery Alabama, preceding the Best Practices Exchange.

As always, the meeting featured an incredible diversity of presentations and conversations that reflect the breadth of collections that make up the web archiving community. Topics covered in presentations ranged from ephemeral web art to government documents collected by state archives. Some might wonder what a university archivist tasked with collecting student organization websites would gain from learning about a modern composers website archive, but the reality is that web archivists face many of the same challenges in selecting and archiving content from the web no matter their institution.

The variety of the Archive-It community allows for this cross pollination of web archivists who might not often get the chance to speak and connect with each other. For us, some of the most exciting aspects of the Archive-It partner meeting include moments when this diverse set of professionals can engage in productive and insightful conversations where their priorities overlap and can be translated into new feature requests for the service or opportunities for programmatic collaboration. We saw this happen in a very fruitful Birds of a Feather breakout session that included topics like Quality Assurance of Web Archives, Collaboration between collecting institutions, State Archives and Libraries, and Archive-It Collections on Archive.org.

We can go on and on about how awesome the Archive-It community is, but why don’t you take their word for it? Check out these meeting recaps from Michele Weigle of Old Dominion University and Karl Blumenthal of NYARC. Both have written excellent and very detailed accounts of the meeting and the various presentations.

The 2015 Archive-It Partner Meeting will take a place in Cleveland, Ohio before the Society of American Archivists conference. We hope that this allows for a more accessible meeting for partners who already attend this conference annually. Stay tuned for more information.

You can access slides from the presentations on our wiki.
