The seeds of our organization were planted in the summer of 2012 when members of our community held a fundraiser to help five local families recover from a devastating fire. During the wake of Superstorm Sandy in the fall of 2012, hundreds of volunteers came together to form the Bay Ridge Cares Kitchen—preparing and delivering more than 26,000 hot and healthy meals to hard hit areas like Coney Island, Rockaway, Breezy Point, Gerritsen Beach and Staten Island. With a desire to keep this sense of “small town” alive, a group came together in early 2013 to launch Bay Ridge Cares as an official nonprofit, establishing a Board of Directors and filing for 501c(3) status.
