We serve those that work or live in these four metro areas in Alabama: Birmingham, Huntsville, Montgomery, and Mobile." CommuteSmart is a federally-funded initiative of the Regional Planning Commission of Greater Birmingham that formed in 1999 to promote alternative commuting options for the Birmingham area.

Description: "Bringing people together in a non-regulatory way to preserve Alabama’s water resources; connecting stakeholders to improve Alabama’s waters; teaching children and adults to protect Alabama’s rivers." The ACWP works to improve water quality throughout Alabama. The ACWP process is made possible by having ten dedicated basin facilitators and sponsoring organizations on the ground to coordinate basin meetings and projects, and a statewide coordinator in place tasked with supporting the facilitators and the transfer of information between basins.

Description: The Southern Environmental Center (SEC) is the largest educational facility of its kind in Alabama, dedicated to showing individuals how they can protect and improve their local environments. In addition to its award-winning Interactive Museum and the Hugh Kaul EcoScape garden on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College, the SEC is also active in the community. It has initiated a number of model partnerships targeting water quality, smog, and sprawl; its EcoScape program is nationally recognized as a model for urban revitalization; and the SEC co-manages the Turkey Creek Nature Preserve, home to three federally endangered species of fish.
