Description: Simple cross-cultural misunderstandings and language barriers can create problems that can have life-changing consequences for newly arrived immigrants. Fifteen Ball State students and their professor have conducted community action research that has taken them into businesses, churches, schools, police stations, courtrooms, jails, and victim support and advocacy agencies around Hamilton County, in Central Indiana. They have identified common issues where recently arrived Hispanic immigrants can unintentionally stumble into conflict. Sobrevivir is a series of four educational telenovelas written and produced by the “Servir y Aprender” seminar class at the Virginia Ball Center for Creative Inquiry at Ball State University. The videos are available to the public, in hopes of preventing possible conflicts in the future.

Description: In 2018, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford testified against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who sexually assaulted her at a high school party in the 1980s. During her testimony, Ford recalled her strongest memory of the night—the sound of Kavanaugh and a second assailant laughing. That resonated with us, and the more we watched, heard, and learned about sexual violence, the more we realized that every survivor has their own indelible memory. It became our mission to shed light on these stories and to give agency to survivors all across the nation. In the fall semester of 2019, Professor Jill Christman and a group of talented, dedicated students set out to change the way sexual violence on college campuses is discussed.

Description: Peace, Love, and Dance is a dance on film work influenced by self-described Black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet - Audre Lorde and her writings on creatively using our differences to bring change. The work explores her idea of there not being a hierarchy of oppression and asks the question of "How do we find equity, justice, and liberation on race and gender issues that have been plaguing our world for centuries?" Through research and collaboration, Peace, Love, and Dance explores the possibilities to the posed question through acknowledgment of the past, understanding the depth of one's identity, and more. This work is an ongoing conversation and process.

Description: What is craftivism? Craftivism is a form of activism that involves the use of traditional hand-made crafts. We are engaging in a kinder, gentler form of protest to try to change the minds and hearts of the female members of the US Senate that are rushing to fill the US Supreme Court seat left open by the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. We are doing this by activating Crafters and Craftivists from around the country to send each of them a necklace styled after RBG's famous Dissent Collar with a handwritten letter. We seek to use RBG's distinctive style and words to show our DISSENT to her rapid replacement on the court.

We seek to create a way to archive and celebrate the stories of the women who shaped and influenced us through the creation of craft pieces in any medium as well as accompanying storytelling materials. This is an opportunity to think about your own story as you thoughtfully construct pieces that might serve as touchstones for generations to come or that are shared with a wider audience.
