Description: Every two years, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics holds a one-day maths fair at the University of Melbourne. The target audience consists of Year 11 and 12 students and their teachers. The main objectives of the fair are: To promote the importance and broad applications of mathematics and problem solving skills To raise awareness of career opportunities for mathematics and statistics graduates. The program is designed to both engage as well as inform. There are two key events: Mathematicians Exposed! and the Mathematics in Industry and Technology (MIT) Challenge.

Title: Melbourne University/BHP Billiton Maths Competition

Description: The competition has been in existence since 1972. It is wholly organised and run by volunteer staff of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at The University of Melbourne. The competition is of a demanding standard, designed to identify real mathematical talent. Between 3000 and 5000 students enter, and some 150 are awarded prizes. The nature of the problems is different from that encountered in school mathematics syllabi, being less mechanical and requiring a higher level of mathematical insight and creativity. As such, participation is likely to be rewarding only to those students who have a real love for, and ability in, mathematics.

Since the early 1990s, Indonesian studies has undergone an impressive growth in both student numbers and staffing and Indonesian studies are now available across a wide range of Departments, Faculties and Centres, including Architecture, Building and Planning, Commerce, Engineering, Law and Medicine, as well as more traditional locations such as Language, Anthropology, Politics and History. The 1997 appointment of Professor Arief Budiman as the inaugural Professor of Indonesian Studies within the Melbourne Institute of Asian Languages and Societies consolidated the proliferation of research, teaching and other Indonesia-related activities at Melbourne.
