Description: The University of Melbourne governs its operations through statutes, regulations, policies, procedures and guidelines. A policy is a formal statement that gives effect to statutory, regulatory or organisational requirements, contains principles of good management and supports the University’s strategic goals. A University policy mandates action or constrains action to achieve organisational outcomes or to meet legislative or regulatory requirements. It may also be a statement of intent. The Melbourne University Act provides for the establishment of the University, its governing body (the Council) and its core functions. Under the Act, there are Statutes and Regulations approved by Council that establish elements of the University’s structure, such as faculties, and regulate specific areas of activity such as enrolment. The Act, Statutes and Regulations are complemented by policies and procedures that provide detailed guidance on areas of operation such as student assessment, staff employment and financial management.
