Description: The Social Justice Initiative was founded at the University of Melbourne in 2007. The aim of the Social Justice Initiative (SJI) is to facilitate interdisciplinary research of international standing and strengthen the growing interest in questions of social justice at the University of Melbourne and beyond. In particular, the SJI aims to build links between the different theoretical understandings and practical applications of social justice developed across a range of disciplines. These include: inequality, poverty, distributive justice, welfare and unemployment policy, the nature of work, the social justice implications of new technologies, mental and indigenous health, obesity, global justice and the social justice implications of climate change. SJI members also conduct research on key theoretical dimensions of social justice including: inequality, poverty, tolerance and distributive justice. The Research section of this website outlines projects undertaken and funded by the SJI. The Initiative is being funded through the Melbourne Strategic Research Initiatives Fund as well as by the Faculties of Arts, Economics and Commerce, Law, and Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

Description: From colonisation to conciliation: A collaborative examination of social work practice with Indigenous populations', is an international Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage Project Recognising that the social work profession has a complex history of working with Indigenous populations-and that one of the factors in maintaining this problematic relationship is the marginalisation of Indigenous issues within mainstream social work practice-this project brings together Indigenous community representatives and Elders, social work practitioners and academics across Australia and the United States, together with other international education and practice developments, to identify the ways in which social work practice can enhance, rather than inhibit, Indigenous well-being.

Description: CONDUIT™ is an information network underpinned by a formal methodology and a set of electronic tools to manage informed consent, data extraction, linkage, cleansing, analysis and presentation. The vision is a spatial network, stretching from Northern Melbourne to Northeast Victoria, which will enable the conduct of comprehensive population health and cohort studies, with urban-rural comparisons. The theoretical and technical underpinnings of CONDUIT™ are consolidated through formal partnerships and formal contract agreements with key computing and health informatics networks. These partnerships place the Faculty and University in a strong strategic position to undertake longitudinal studies which span the continuum from benchtop to clinical research in hospital and community settings.

Description: The Little Stringybark Creek Project is a research program co-ordinated by The University of Melbourne and Monash University. It is putting into practice new approaches to stormwater management, that focus on improving the health of creeks and rivers. Working with local government, water authorities and residents, the project will test the design and implementation of real, on-ground solutions. Most importantly, the project will test how stormwater management can be improved in established suburbs, like Mt Evelyn. This will be a world-first demonstration of restoring an urban creek by fixing up its biggest problem first: urban stormwater runoff.
