COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Title: "Gingerbread 2020" | Old Town Bakery

URL: https://www.picuki.com/media/2451169567012913223/

Description: Old Town Bakery on Instagram: "Gingerbread 2020 “Ooooh, what’s the theme going to be this year?” I have been asked that question more times than ever before this year. Honsetly, for a brief while I considered not doing a display this year. We can’t have customers in the shop, it kind of seemed like “What’s the point? Where would I even put it?” But the other part of me said “no! you’re not going to let Covid take this away from you too” So, what to do? I’ve explained my process before. Pick a style or nationality, run it through my gingerbread loving head, and voila! A cookie & candy display appears. I just couldn’t find anything that “fit right” this year. So I started asking those around me what they “wanted for Christmas?” Most shrugged and said “I don’t really need anything”. Which I get, but it’s not what I asked. I said “what do you want? Not need.” So, I decided to be selfish & just make what I want. Make my Christmas wish. This year I started with a song- “One Love” by Bob Marley. It’s from an album I grew up listening to- a favourite of my child-(and adult)hood. The song is the second track on my wedding CD. It’s a song I love, and the message is perfect for right now- One Love is an expression of unity and inclusion. And that’s my Christmas wish. I want to bring the whole world closer together, so if only for a moment, we can feel alright. I have family in Ethiopia this year, and some on the Island, and others in Vancouver- friends in Australia, and people I love in Europe. And honestly, they all feel equally far away. If not for the distance, but just in the inability to hold them close. So I made a… “cookie Pangaea” if you will. I brought all the continents close together, and wrapped them up in some sweet holiday love & sugar snow There it is. If anyone’s looking for a last minute gift for me, that’s what I want. Go home, hug those you can, crank “One Love” to eleven, and for a few minutes feel alright. (oh, and you can also flood the bakery facebook page with pictures of your own gingerbread creations, that’s the second thing I want) So, however and whatever you choose to celebrate at home this holiday, we at the bakery wish you all the best 🤍"
