COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Description: Brishti Basu on Twitter: "My partner and I, both in our 20s, weren’t able to book our 2nd doses until this week. Strange and a little condescending to imply that the low rate of double vax among young people is somehow because young people don’t want to get vaccinated, when we have an age-based rollout. https://twitter.com/HedyFry/status/1418298559514939393 / Feels a little like more of what we’ve seen from the Premier throughout the pandemic: blaming us for rising cases, when it’s been documented that younger people faced some of the worst impacts of the pandemic."

Title: [Reporting on Omicron's impact on Greater Victoria hospitals]

URL: https://twitter.com/brish_ti/status/1474230304206630916/

Description: Brishti Basu on Twitter: "Latest for @CapitalDailyVic : I spoke to two doctors who work in Island Health/#yyj hospitals who say public health has not communicated any plans regarding what will happen when the predicted surge of #omicron cases hits BC hospitals: / Hospitals across the Island are nearly full already & care is already being compromised due to shortages @bcCOVID19group modelling shows even in best case scenario, BC expects 700 hospitalizations and 400 ICU by Jan 8 (For context, today there were 195 active cases in hospital) / “It’s a double whammy because not only are we over-capacity for patients, we’re short-staffed on nurses,” said @AmyTanMD “People are burnt out, people have retired, people have quit. It's actually worse than March 2020 because the system is so burnt out from two years of this. / With more #omicron patients on the way, she and James, an emergency physician at VGH and Jubilee, fear more and more healthcare workers will get infected. Consequences: more nurse/doctor shortages while they isolate + staff inadvertently spreading COVID to other patients. / One simple step they want, which ON and AB have taken: N95 masks for hospital staff to wear when in contact with COVID-positive or suspected COVID-positive patients. To do this, BC public health would have to acknowledge airborne transmission. / Anecdotally, more HCWs have been infected recently than before. But, James says, public health still says transmission doesn't happen at hospitals. The lack of adequate PPE is contributing to heightened risk + HCWs feeling like govt and public health don't have their back. / “We know if the virus is transmitted in the air, it doesn't matter where you are,” James said. “The virus doesn't know whether you're in church or whether you're in a gym or whether you're in a shopping mall, or in a restaurant.” Full story: #COVID19BC"

Not sure if this disjointed approach is also happening in other health authorities. 4/4"

Title: [Experience with COVID-19 testing on Vancouver Island]

URL: https://twitter.com/brish_ti/status/1478095510645133312/

Description: Brishti Basu on Twitter: "Over the past 2 days, I've had symptoms of COVID-19 tht aren't getting better: headaches, body aches, sore throat, a cough. This morning I called the Island Health testing line and, to their credit, only had to hold for 5 minutes before getting through. 1/ / After I requested a PCR test, the lady on the line asked me a number of questions and determined that even though I have symptoms, I only qualify for a Rapid Test Kit. PCR tests right now are reserved for frontline workers/vulnerable people. Ok, I get that. 2/ / So I went to the website to book a pickup time/location for the RAT kit. I chose the closest option: the Victoria Conference Centre. Turns out, there are no RATs at this site today, tomorrow, or Wednesday. The calendar wouldn't let me go beyond that. 3/ / The next best option: the former Blanshard Elementary School site. Even there, no RATs available until Wednesday. I don't know if I have COVID or not, but personally, I'm isolating for the next 10 days (except Wednesday, when I have to go pick up this test). 4/ / It's almost laughable that BC is now basing their guidance on whether or not people should isolate on the results of Rapid Tests. These are the same tests we've been told over and over are not accurate, not a panacea, not a silver bullet, etc. etc. 5/ / And if Rapid Tests are now being used widely as part of provincial policy, why not make them available at pharmacies and other locations? Why force people who may be sick to go get them personally, days after they realize they're sick? Anyway, that's my rant. 6/ / Last tweet: Just minutes after I posted this thread, I had several extremely kind people reach out and offer to share their own rapid test kits with me. I'm blown away by your generosity, and thanks to you, I'll be able to test today. Thank you thank you thank you."
