Description: Contact tracing has its limits. When the numbers are small, contact tracers can reach a large fraction of the individuals who have been in close, direct contact with known cases. With an increasing number of cases, however, the capacity to call exposed individuals eventually reaches a cap. As a result, contact tracing introduces “bistability” into the dynamics of an epidemic: tamping down infections when the numbers are low but not when they are high.

Description: Unfortunately, we will not have enough vaccine doses for every British Columbian who wants to be vaccinated before the end of summer. We have to decide in what order British Columbians get the doses we do have. We hope that soon, people 80 years and older, COVID-facing healthcare workers, and remote indigenous communities will have all received both doses. We need to figure out who comes next.

Description: How to safely increase our opportunity for broader social interaction by carefully relaxing what are very taxing social-distancing measures How to safely and sensibly reboot the economy as much as possible, while keeping people safe This is not a simple trade-off, but an extremely complex exercise for all of us in optimizing the physical, mental, social, and economic health of the people of British Columbia in the face of an epidemic that is more challenging than we have seen in generations. This plan sets out the proposed dimensions of this balancing act based on hitting a “sweet spot” using dynamic modelling based on BC data – moving from the current targeted lockdown restrictions resulting in approximately 30% of normal social interaction, toward a sustainable 60% of social interaction, with restated levels of targeted restrictions

Description: Our organizations hear regularly from families who struggle with accessing funding and services for programs offered through the Ministry of Children and Family Development as well as other programs. This survey was put together in response to an increase in advocacy calls to all of our organizations with regard to Children and Youth with Special Needs (CYSN) funding. The intent of the survey was to find out how families are coping with the extra pressures caused by COVID-19, and to hear about their experiences accessing emergency pandemic funding and/or services for their child or youth with disabilities through MCFD’s CYSN program.

Description: In May 2021, the BC government responded to public calls led by the labour movement and legislated a permanent paid sick leave program to begin in January 2022 under the Employment Standards Act. The province is now consulting with the public as well as business over how that program will work: including qualifying requirements, benefit levels and funding. This report is our contribution to that discussion. We’ve looked at the evidence from BC and elsewhere, drawing on public health, economic and other published literature, as well as the real-life experience of programs in jurisdictions around the world. This research and experience confirm that paid sick leave should be a right of employment for all workers—one that protects society from broader contagion and illness, and benefits and helps not only workers and their families, but businesses of all sizes as well.
