Description: As President, I was sent a copy of the April 14th letter that you received from many of the mayors and regional district chairs within the AVICC region. These leaders were very concerned about the number of people travelling to Vancouver Island for recreational and non-essential purposes on the Easter long week-end, and would like to avoid a repeat of this on the May long week-end and throughout the summer as long as the public health emergency remains. The governing board of the AVICC reviewed the April 14th letter, and would like to echo their request, and respectfully encourage you to increase the messaging from your office that people not travel for non-essential purposes.

Description: This research study explored strengths of digital teaching and learning in trades, vocational, education, and training (TVET). The study used a mixed-methods research methodology with an appreciative inquiry approach to capture both quantitative and qualitative data. The intention was to capture TVET instructors’ perceptions while remote delivery restraints were still in place in the Province of British Columbia during the COVID -19 global pandemic. Data were gathered through a survey involving 37 participants and interviews with nine participants. The study revealed three themes to strengthen digital learning and teaching in TVET: digital pedagogy, technology and tools, and open educational resources and open pedagogy. The global pandemic has changed trades education and the use of digital pedagogy offers educators the opportunity to permanently embrace these approaches.

Description: The BC COVID-19 Modelling team issued their twenty-fourth report on the status of COVID-19 in British Columbia (August 17th, 2022). This report shows that the Omicron BA.5 wave has peaked across much of Canada. Nevertheless, risks of infection remain high, with infections likely 100-fold more common than reported cases at present.

Description: The BC COVID-19 Modelling team issued their twenty-fifth report on the status of COVID-19 in British Columbia (October 5th, 2022). The BA.5-driven Omicron wave persists with high rates of infection. The prolonged nature of the BA.5 wave is consistent with waning of immunity from infections and vaccinations early in the year. Future projections predict a rise in cases, even without new variants that are better able to evade immunity. Underreporting of cases is extremely high, with ~100-fold more infections currently than reported cases.

Description: The only way things can return to normal in BC is if a large portion of our population obtains immunity to the virus, either through infection or through vaccination. The problem is that there are three groups of people who are not protected when the vaccine rollout is complete, even under the most optimistic assumptions: i) children ii) people who decline the vaccine, iii) people for whom their vaccine doses are ineffective (efficacy is high, but not 100%). When we relax restrictions after the vaccination rollout the virus will have an opportunity to spread in these populations. But maybe the number of people who have immunity through vaccination will be enough, and at that point there will be few or no new infections: a consequence of so-called herd immunity.

Description: Unevenness in vaccination status poses a problem for universities, festivals, trade shows, conferences, or other organizations who might want to quantify how at-risk their participants are for COVID-19 infection. As more restrictions are lifted and travel restrictions become lighter, the age and regional makeup of these participants will become more diverse, and this problem will only grow. To address this, we have created a browser app to estimate the numbers of unvaccinated, partially vaccinated, and fully vaccinated people in a group at a future date.
