COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

Description: Alanna Kelly on Twitter: "By the time I did my research on #Omicron I tested positive for it. I am fully vaccinated and have #COVID19. It’s surreal to say… 🧵 / I had symptoms for one day, just 24 hours. With no rapid tests in B.C., it took me 24 hours to even get a test, the same amount of time I had symptoms for. I felt ‘normal’ the day I went for my test. / Public health nurses can’t pinpoint when or where I got the virus. Two friends tested positive at the same time as me. We were together two days before my symptoms showed up. All three of us are double vaccinated. / It’s terrifying to see how quickly this variant rips through vaccinated people. I WFH and have minimal contacts. Contact tracing is now an honour system. It took public health three days to contact me. All of my contacts have tested negative. Stay safe, friends."

We‘re both double vaxxed, wear masks, and felt like we we were being careful, but it still got us. / Wish I could say the symptoms were mild but they weren’t. We got hit hard. Fevers, aches, coughs, the works. It took 4-5 days but we’ve both finally turned a corner and are feeling better. Don’t know if it was omicron. / We’re now in isolation until the 25th. Biggest takeaway is I’m glad we we’re double-vaxxed. If not, outcome could’ve been much worse. Thx to everyone who has reached out. Can’t wait to get healthy and back to work. See you soon. Stay safe."

URL: https://twitter.com/MickSweetman/status/1473030275215020040/

Description: Mick Sweetman on Twitter: "I deleted a previous tweet as the small clinic in #Nanaimo was open this weekend for 5-11 year-old appointments. I regret the error, but the bigger point about a lack of capacity and urgency stands. / When it is open the aim is for 1,000 shots a day, but that is resulting in long lines of people waiting for their shot inside the mall. The physical space and number of staff are reduced compared to the mass clinic at Beben Park in the spring/summer (which was well organized). / Follow up, of sorts, I asked Island Health to clarify what days the vaccine clinics are open this week and was told that they would look into it, then the clinic location website with that information was taken down entirely. / Just wanted to pull this over from another thread. Looks like the #Nanaimo vaccine clinic will be open this week for adult first-dose walk ins and 5-11 year old vaccinations now with the exception of the stat holidays."
