COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North)

Collected by: Vancouver Island University

Archived since: Mar, 2020

Description:

In March 2020 the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC) stated: "The deadly flu outbreak of 1918-19 is often called the ‘forgotten pandemic.’ Our responsibility now is to ensure the lessons of COVID-19 are not forgotten. Our collective efforts to capture and preserve the essential online elements of this unprecedented event are critical." (CARL-ABRC). The COVID-19: Vancouver Island, BC (Central & North) Web Archive reflects community experiences and responses to the pandemic in the region served by Vancouver Island University, documenting and supporting diverse aspects of scholarly inquiry, creativity, and community life. The Web Archive is intended to provide a body of information that will support scholarship, creativity, and study. Information rights related to web archiving include considerations of copyright and fair dealing, and of individual and community privacy. The following are among principles and resources that guide web archiving decisions: Ethics of care, for example in VIU Library’s Pledge to our user communities; OCAP® principles, and awareness of relationality and accountability to Indigenous communities, and potential impacts related to web archiving; Good practice and expert advice, emerging and accessed through communities of practice, e.g. the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition (CWAC); and VIU Library, Evolution of Physical Collections: 2017-2021 VIU Library, Special Collections Guidelines (Under review 2020). Web archives are informed by available capture technologies and also by affordances of the content source; not all websites can be successfully crawled or rendered, and quality of archived versions varies. This project is supported by VIU's Special Funding for COVID-19 research projects and carried out in coordination with the University of Victoria’s COVID-19 Collection and the Canadian Web Archiving Coalition. Contact us at research.help@viu.ca with questions or for more information about content included in the Web Archive. [Working description 2021 April 6]

URL: https://twitter.com/JessLStanley/status/1443715341176115200/

Description: Dr. Jessica Stanley on Twitter: "I have received lots of questions about the k-3 mask mandate. This thread explains why I support mask mandates in k-3 and have submitted a motion asking my board to expand our current mask mandate to include k-3. I am happy to provide sources for my claims. 1/ / Delta is more transmissible; Covid rates among children increased 10x last year’s rates. Currently, BC children aged 9-11 have the highest rate of new infections among any age group. <12 are not eligible for the vaccination. 2/ / The CDC reports children’s hospitalization rates have increased 5x since Delta & that unvaccinated children are 10x more likely to be hospitalized. There are a greater number of Covid infections among children due to Delta & unvaccinated children are particularly vulnerable. 3/ / Although children tend to have mild symptoms and low hospitalization rates, the higher infection rates mean that the risk for children now is the greatest it has been in this pandemic. 4/ / Mask mandates in schools reduces Covid transmission and are associated with lower infection rates for students & and their family members. Concerns about emotional impacts of mask wearing among children are unfounded. 5/ / Mask wearing in children does not limit ability to breathe nor their ability to interpret & react to emotions & is not associated with negative psychological effects. Public policy must consider transmissibility & vaccine availability. Children under 12 cannot be vaccinated. 6/ / Despite vaccine ineligibility & dramatic increase in infection rates, children <10 are not required to wear masks in BC schools. In contrast, the CDC & AAP recommend “universal indoor masking for all teachers, staff, students (age 2 yrs+), & visitors to K-12 schools" 7/ / Mask mandates significantly reduce the spread of COVID-19 in school populations and thus help avoid school shutdowns. 8/ / It is clear that BC school boards have the jurisdiction to supplement the current mask mandate in public schools. The PHO has expressly acknowledged that school boards have this authority. 9/ / Given that Delta is causing dramatic increases in children’s infection rates, that children <12 are not vaccinated, that mask been shown to be effective in reducing Covid transmission, and that there is no evidence that mask wearing causes harm in children, ... 10/ / ...BC school boards should use their PHO approved authority to implement a mask mandate for all students in the K-12 system. 11/"

URL: https://twitter.com/SoniaFurstenau/status/1422675261414277121?s=20

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "The school year is right around the corner, but our #COVID19 plans are outdated. The #DeltaVariant has taken over - and it is more transmissible. This puts unvaccinated kids at risk, as we saw with the 150 kids <10 yrs old who tested positive in June and July. 1/ #bcpoli / A US report found that w/o masks, 70% of a classroom could contract the #DeltaVariant. As it stands, kids will not be adequately protected in schools - no vaccines for those under 12, no masks, even physical distancing of 2 m is no longer recommended. 2/ #bcpoli / It is important to prepare for a safe return and set realistic expectations in classrooms, but this gov’t needs to show they are continuing to take the risks of #LongCOVID seriously for unvaccinated children. 3/ #bcpoli / We need smaller class sizes & proper distancing, enhanced ventilation, mandatory masking, & contact tracing. All of this needs to be in place before children and teachers return to schools in September. 4/4 #bcpoli"

Description: Sonia Furstenau on Twitter: "This chapter of the pandemic has me the most worried. When we should be treating this pandemic and the Delta variant with the utmost seriousness, we are seeing increasing cases in schools, lack of support for unhoused people w/ COVID, and increasing community division. 1/ #bcpoli / Some will not get vaccinated, & we can’t ignore them. We have to protect them & their communities w strong public health measures like masks, ventilation, filtration, & effective contact tracing. We need better communications & transparency to bring them in, not shut them out. 2/ / We need masks for K-3 students, filtration and ventilation, and resources available to learn remotely whenever requested. COVID is already in our schools and spreading amongst our kids, it is not too late to prevent further transmission. 3/ #bcpoli / Lastly, we need to consider implementing an independent COVID-19 advisory panel that acts as a backstop for government data to increase credibility and trust. This gov’t has been burdened for 18 months, & this could support their hard work. 4/ #bcpoli"

Title: [Comment on Island Health combining COVID-19 testing and vaccine sites in Nanaimo]

URL: https://twitter.com/frozen/status/1457889765882089476/

Description: Tom Jackman on Twitter: "This Wednesday, @VanIslandHealth , in their infinite wisdom, will combine Nanaimo's testing and vaccine sites into one. What's more, they're ending drive-through testing, so seniors desperate for a booster dose will be lined up in the same room as COVID positives. #bcpoli #bced / And to make matters worse, each one of those potential COVID positives will be forced to REMOVE THEIR MASK for their gargle test. If you thought Nanaimo's case numbers were bad now, just wait until these two groups are literally sharing the same air at the same time, everyday. / Sick people will be more likely to infect others during this process, and those COVID negatives who do the right thing and seek out testing will be more likely to come away with a dose of COVID after all. Even the scheduling line nurses think this new process is madness. / When BC's deputy health officer, Dr. Réka Gustafson, told us to stop focusing on case numbers, she cruelly meant it. These officials are trying to "tough love" their way through the Delta wave, with predictably horrible results for the rest of us. / And yeah, the absolute best/worst part of this? The combined testing/vaccination site will be in a shopping mall. It's as though BC is actively and purposely unlearning the hard-fought lessons gained during the last two years of pandemicking. https://twitter.com/DoMindDying/status/1457891078573420545?s=20"

Description: Tom Jackman on Twitter: "What's with the recent COVID surge in @VanIslandHealth? Well, it depends on who you ask. Dr. Stanwick, VIHA's Chief MHO, says it's mostly due to the fact that the island didn't build up enough herd immunity from earlier waves (dubious), and is definitely not due to PH failures. / In contrast, Dr. Forrest, an ICU doctor in Nanaimo, paints a much grimmer picture. During a recent interview with @Protect_BC, he says his ICU continues to be "essentially overwhelmed," with many HCWs close to burnout. As long as case numbers are high, ICU capacity is in danger. / In summary, you have a BCPH official saying this is becoming a "casedemic" and not to worry, while an ICU doctor who treats actual COVID patients continues to sound the alarm about the dangerousness of the situation with respect to mortality and overall hospital capacity."

Description: Justin McElroy on Twitter: "Every day somebody asks if there is info on new cases/hospitalizations by vaccination status. The government doesn't provide that data with any regularity, as they always lag behind other jurisdictions in transparency of new pandemic metrics. If I had the data, I would share. / The same things that we talked about in the last week still hold: - You are at much decreased risk with two shots - The variant is very transmissible and without new restrictions cases should grow - Hospitalizations/deaths will be much lower this wave - It's still a pandemic / While we have evidence from other countries that 4th wave Delta surges plateau at a lower level than 2nd or 3rd wave, we still don't have data on how much lower they will go. And we have reopening up of schools and universities in a month. Choices ahead for the government."

URL: https://twitter.com/realreporter/status/1440457289148764170/

Description: Salim Jiwa on Twitter: "#bcpoli We've been asking for changes in how BC is dealing with the Delta wave. Setting aside our differences with government I want to provide a thread on changes made by Dr. Henry and Minister Dix. 1/ / Contact tracing teams that have been depleted are being boosted by approximately 300 people. Additional CTs added to all regions but highest share goes to swamped 56 CTs on Island. 113 to be added there. The new additions take staffing to peak infection levels in Spring. 2/ / DBH initially said letters to parents from school exposures will not go out because they were causing anxiety. We pointed out rumours were causing more anxiety. Notifications start again this week. 3/ / 790 surgeries cancelled due to swamped hospitals. Diversion of nurses to take care of covid patients. The stretch is worse in Northern where north-east area has very low vaxx rate. 15 spaces created on Island and Vancouver to transfer out Northern patients. 4/ / Other points are vaccines and pregnancy. Pregnant women in ICU. Preterm babies and often stillborn. DBH emphasized need for vaxx for pregnant women. Safety of vaxx is proven. Please get it done. 5/ / Younger children are likely to get vaccinated as soon as data is submitted by manufacturers to Health Canada. That's likely to happen by end of October. I think it'd be helpful to mandate masks at least until these kids are vaxxed and even after. 6/"
