Description:

The Brooklyn Jewish History Project is a community scanning and oral history repository, to document the history, lives and experiences of Jewish people in Brooklyn. The collection, largely spanning the twentieth century to the present, is comprised of digitized oral histories, photographs, personal items and documents donated by Brooklyn residents reflecting their life and Jewish identity, as well as related web content. Funding for this collection provided by the David Berg Foundation.

Title: The Brooklyn Jewish Center

Description: The Brooklyn Jewish Center was founded with the vision of being an all inclusive Synagogue Center. The cornerstone, laid on June 13th 1920, was the foundation of a building which housed an elaborate sanctuary, wedding ballroom, a day school, a swimming pool, and a health club. Designed to cater to every Jewish need, the Center also maintained a full-service kosher restaurant and an extensive adult education program. The center's founding rabbi was Rabbi Israel H. Levinthal, who continued in this capacity until 1954, then later as the Rabbi Emeritus. He was succeeded by Rabbi Benjamin Z. Kreitman. Rabbis Schwartman, Haymowitz and Bloch also served a Spiritual Leaders. The once famous Brooklyn Jewish Center, located at 667 Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, today exists as Educational Institute Oholei Torah.

Description: Throughout the years, a warm friendship has been maintained between the administration of Oholei Torah and the former members of the Brooklyn Jewish Center. The members have joined in and taken pride in several momentous events at Oholei Torah and have participated in various yeshiva building campaigns and annual dinners. In a show of appreciation and ahavas yisroel, a reunion celebration is being planned for those who were associated with the center. This celebration will culminate the current façade restoration project and commemorate the 90th year of the building of the Brooklyn Jewish Center edifice.
