Description: This archive includes all published material produced by Art Practical, a visual arts publishing organization based in San Francisco, between its founding in 2009 and its departure from a partnership with California College of the Arts (CCA) which lasted from 2014–2020. In 2020, Art Practical described itself as people-forward and equitable. They published with passion, rigor, and integrity through initiatives that included online arts discourse, podcasts, books, educational programs, and public events. As a platform, Art Practical embraced these many forms to connect diverse regional voices and amplify underrepresented perspectives from the Bay Area and broader West Coast. The content published by Art Practical represents hundreds of artists, galleries, arts institutions, and projects in the voices of over 450 writers and contributors. The site also housed the several years of legacy content produced by Art Practical’s predecessor, Shotgun Review, and by the art calendar Happenstand. In 2019, Art Practical folded Shotgun Reviews into their broader Reviews column, in an effort to be more deliberate with how the organization engaged language around gun violence. Beginning with its inception, Art Practical also produced a monthly interview column in conjunction with Bad at Sports, a weekly podcast produced starting in 2005 from Chicago that featured artists talking about art and the community that makes, reviews, and critiques it. Bad at Sports aired the audio episode of the interview while Art Practical published an excerpted text article.
