This committee was created in the 1993 Session of the NC General Assembly and is comprised of 34 appointed members. The committee recommends to the Secretary a plan for the statewide implementation of an interagency comprehensive coordinated cancer control program; identifies and examines the limitations and problems associated with existing laws, regulations, programs, and services related to cancer control; examines the financing and access to cancer control services for North Carolina's citizens, and advises the Secretary on a coordinated and efficient use of resources; identifies and reviews health promotion and disease prevention strategies relating to the leading causes of cancer mortality and morbidity; and recommends standards.

Description: This is the website of the Cancer Assistance Unit. This program is focused on providing financial assistance for diagnostic testing and treatment to low-income, uninsured patients. The NC Cancer Control Program was the first program in the nation to provide funds for treatment of low-income, uninsured patients with cancer, and the program still has few peers nationally. Similar programs exist in Georgia (Cancer State Aid) and Delaware (the Delaware Cancer Treatment Program). We are unaware of comparable programs in any other States.
