Description: "In spring of 2019, the university is embarking on a university-wide self-study effort in pursuit of re-accreditation by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education in spring 2021. Accreditation in higher education is a process of peer review for colleges, universities, and educational programs. In the U.S., accreditation is carried out through private, nonprofit organizations. Cornell’s accrediting body, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, is an institutional accreditor recognized by the federal government. Middle States serves the accrediting agency for educational institutions in the mid-Atlantic region of the US. Accreditation is voluntary but it is required in order for students to gain access to federal funds including student grants and loans. Non-accredited institutions are not eligible to receive for federal financial aid."--taken from website 2023.10.16

Description: "Chemosensory perception of food is a conscious experience initiated by chemicals: odorants, tastants, and chemesthetic substances. Terry Acree and the other scientists in his laboratory study food composition and its relationship to the chemosensory perception of flavor. Surprisingly, their studies of odorants in flavor reveal fewer than 1,000 chemicals at concentrations potent enough to affect flavor in food. First published by Terry Acree and Henry Arn in 1997, the web data base called Flavornet lists most of these odorants and cites the research that first described their potency. Therefore, the diversity of smell experienced by humans is mediated by a smaller set of chemicals than the hundreds of thousands commonly estimated."--taken from website 2024.10.21

Description: "Iota Chapter at Cornell was founded on March 27, 1909, by a group of ten undergraduates. The new fraternity prospered, and in 1913 it moved to its current location overlooking beautiful Fall Creek Gorge. Thanks to generous support from our alumni, additions to the Rockledge house have been made regularly over the past 100 years. In 1924, the west and north wings were added, containing 15 single bedrooms and expanded dining and social facilities. Alpha Sig has made and continues to make distinctive contributions to the Cornell community. Andrew Dickson White, the first president of and co-founder of Cornell, was initiated into the fraternity at Yale in 1850. He served as the fraternity's national president from 1913 to 1915 and helped found the chapter at Cornell. Other distinctive alumni include past and current deans of the Agriculture, Hotel, and Veterinary colleges at Cornell, and presidents of major corporate firms."--taken from website 2023.08.14

Human infants and baby birds develop increasingly sophisticated means of communicating that regulate and are regulated by social interaction and feedback. We seek to understand the mechanisms by which communicative development takes place."--taken from website 2024.12.09

Description: "We are currently working on Cretaceous and Cenozoic floras from three provinces in Patagonia, Argentina: Chubut, Río Negro, and Tierra del Fuego. Our projects include the study of floras that range from latest Cretaceous to Miocene in age. The main goal of our research is to enhance our knowledge of the evolution and early diversification of angiosperms (flowering plants) in Patagonia through the study of plant fossils. We seek to increase our understanding of the floristic composition of ancient Patagonia by determining which taxa (types of plants) are present in the paleofloras we are studying and what their nearest living relatives are."--taken from website 2023.10.09

Description: "Ahner Lab research in environmental biotechnology explores how organisms adapt to trace metal stress in the environment and how they in turn influence the form of metals in the environment – for example how plants solubilize, take up, detoxify and sequester metals. Her laboratory group focuses on research questions involving intracellular detoxification mechanisms and how biological processes affect the biogeochemical cycling of metals in the natural environment and in engineered systems. One application of this research is to phytoremediation, the use of plants to remove metals from contaminated soils."--taken from 2024.11.11
