Description: After completing a nationally recognized five-year, $29 million investment in energy efficiency of the campus, UW-Madison initiated another aggressive program in 2006 to further strengthen its environmental stewardship practices and to promote education and motivation to the community on this important issue. This program, under the banner of WE CONSERVE, set to reduce UW's annual energy consumption and environmental footprint by 20% relative to 2006 levels. With an additional investment of $40 million and full campus support that goal was achieved in 2010, making us one of the most accomplished universities in the sustainability arena.

Description: Discovery to Product or D2P is a major new partnership between UW–Madison and the Wisconsin Alumni Research Foundation (WARF) focused on entrepreneurship and building on a long legacy of collaboration to move UW–Madison-inspired technology and innovation to market. The initiative is intended to provide UW–Madison faculty and students with an easy-to-access gateway to a comprehensive suite of resources to help transform ideas and discovery into companies and products to bolster Wisconsin’s economy. UW–Madison scientists, with the help of partners like WARF, have a long tradition of entrepreneurship, and their successes range from Rayovac and Promega to TomoTherapy and Epic. Still, the path from discovery to product is littered with obstacles, from protecting the intellectual property and identifying the market to raising capital and navigating the regulatory landscape.

Description: IceCube is a particle detector at the South Pole that records the interactions of a nearly massless sub-atomic particle called the neutrino. IceCube searches for neutrinos from the most violent astrophysical sources: events like exploding stars, gamma ray bursts, and cataclysmic phenomena involving black holes and neutron stars. The IceCube telescope is a powerful tool to search for dark matter, and could reveal the new physical processes associated with the enigmatic origin of the highest energy particles in nature. IceCube encompasses a cubic kilometer of ice and uses a novel astronomical messenger called a neutrino to probe the universe.

Description: My name is Kait. I’m an undergrad at the university, focusing on journalism and international studies. I’m a transfer student, and sometimes I’m still overwhelmed by the enormity of the campus and the university here, so I’m going on a search…an expedition! I want to find the roots of UW-Madison. I want to find the students who give UW-Madison its flavor. I want to tell your stories. Who are we? Just a guess, but from what I’ve seen of students, we are busy. We are broke. We are passionate. We’re worried about finals and about finding the right internship. We’re worried about the global economy and about the changing environment. We’re worried about our economy, and we’re wondering if we can afford to pay $4.75 for pad thai when rent is due next week. We work hard and we still find time to have fun. We go without sleep and without vitamin C, and we pay the price in Kleenex and NyQuil. We make Goodwill look good. We have approximately 25 minutes of free-time a week, and whether or not we like football, we’re Badgers. So, let’s celebrate it! What’s the idea? Two main ideas inspired this blog: sharing student stories, and giving busy students an online community. I firmly believe that every person has a story, and that everyone’s experiences are worth being shared. I want to hear some of the stories that give Madison its soul. I want to meet you; get to know you. I want to learn where you’re from and why you decided to study here. I want to figure out what makes both you and I feel at home here. I also want to create a place where students can communicate and share experiences online. With crazy schedules and tight budgets, joining a club or student organization isn’t always an option. I didn’t want to feel ostracized just because I work on the weekends and don’t have time for Badger games. If you’re like me, feel welcome! Come on in; you can wear your pyjamas and no one will know or care. Share all of the great photos you took with Instagram this week, check out the campus’ latest videos and share your random musings through Twitter.

Description: The Crossing aims to provide a Christian community at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where students are free to explore and affirm their relationship with God, each other, and the world. We are a progressive, theologically open ministry focused on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. We seek to offer opportunities for students to be embraced by indiscriminate love of God while living out the compassionate message of the gospel. Our community celebrates the rich history of many Christian traditions yet exists emphatically in the present. We are grounded in worship, maintained by fellowship, and seriously engaged with the problems and possibilities of the world.
