New York Climate Change Science Web Archive

Collected by: Cornell University Library

Archived since: May, 2014

Description:

New York State is poised to become a leader in planning for and adapting to the impacts of climate change. Climate change science is a broad and diverse field, and sorting through and understanding the amount and detail of scientific information available is a challenge to scientists, engineers, policy makers and practitioners alike. To address these challenges the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM), Cornell University, State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) and the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have teamed up to create the New York Climate Change Science Clearinghouse (NYCCSC). Funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the NYCCSC will be a regional, web-based interface for accessing data, documents, maps and information relevant to climate change adaptation and mitigation across New York State. Because the site is meant as a portal for discovery of a broad range of information held and maintained elsewhere, this collection will serve as an archive of the changing content climate change websites relevant to and discoverable via the NYCCSC.

URL: http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/0800487/

Description: "The effects of weather on West Nile virus (WNV) mosquito populations in the United States have been widely reported, but few studies assess their overall impact on transmission to humans. Title: Towards More Comprehensive Projections of Urban Heat-Related Mortality: Estimates for New York City under Multiple Population, Adaptation, and Climate Scenarios

URL: http://ehp.niehs.nih.gov/ehp166/

Description: "High temperatures have substantial impacts on mortality and, with growing concerns about climate change, numerous studies have developed projections of future heat-related deaths around the world. Projections of temperature-related mortality are often limited by insufficient information to formulate hypotheses about population sensitivity to high temperatures and future demographics." -- from the website, 1/23/2017 "The present study derived projections of temperature-related mortality in New York City by taking into account future patterns of adaptation or demographic change, both of which can have profound influences on future health burdens." -- from the website, 1/23/2017

Title: Climate Change and Public Health: Publications

URL: http://www.cdc.gov/climateandhealth/publications.htm

Description: "By 2006, many scientists had recognized the need to prepare for the impact climate change will likely have on health, both in the U.S. and worldwide. The CDC Climate and Public Health Framework was created in the same year to address this issue. In 2009, CDC formally established the Climate and Health Program. Our mission is to: 1.) Lead efforts to identify populations vulnerable to climate change; 2) Prevent and adapt to current and anticipated health impacts; 3) Ensure that systems are in place to detect and respond to current and emerging health threats." -- from the website, 1/24/2017

URL: http://www.epa.gov/environmental-economics/mortality-risk-valuation/

Description: "This page contains information on Frequently Asked Questions on Mortality Risk Valuation and EPA practices concerning the use and measurement of the "Value of a Statistical Life" as it is applied in EPA economic analyses." -- from the website, 1/26/2017 "Benefit-cost analysis is an analytical tool used to evaluate public policy options. For environmental policies, benefits are determined by what individuals would be willing to pay for risk reductions or for other improvements from pollution prevention. Costs are determined by the dollar value of the resources directed to pollution reduction. If the total benefits exceed the total costs, then the policy is said to "pass a benefit-cost test.”" -- from the website, 1/26/2017

Title: Indoor Air Quality: Adapting Buildings for Indoor Air Quality in a Changing Climate

URL: http://www.epa.gov/indoor-air-quality-iaq/adapting-buildings-indoor-air-quality-changing-climate/

Description: "Climate change may worsen existing indoor environmental problems and indoor air quality, and it may also introduce new problems as the frequency or severity of adverse outdoor conditions change. Our homes and buildings, where we spend most of our time, provide protection between us and the outdoors. The design, construction, operation and maintenance of buildings can impact the air we breathe, our energy consumption, and our health. To protect all building occupants and maintain safe and healthy indoor environments, considerations for buildings should include occupant health and well being, sustainability, energy efficiency, and changing outdoor conditions." -- from the website, 1/20/2017
