Description: "Adapting urban water systems to climate change Description: ICLEI, UNESCO-IHE and IWA have authored, as part of the ‘SWITCH – Managing Water for the City of the Future’ project, a handbook on adapting urban water systems to climate change. The handbook aims to fill a gap in the adaptation field: while a lot of information is available about various adaptation topics, there is a lack of guidance for decision makers at the local level working on urban water who wish to proactively prepare for and adapt to climate change." -- from the website, 6/17/2016 This page gives the abstract for the paper, "Adapting urban water systems to climate change," and a link to a .pdf of the document.

Description: "LID is an approach to land development (or re-development) that works with nature to manage stormwater as close to its source as possible. LID employs principles such as preserving and recreating natural landscape features, minimizing effective imperviousness to create functional and appealing site drainage that treat stormwater as a resource rather than a waste product." -- from the website, 9/9/2015

Description: "StreamStats is a Web application that incorporates a Geographic Information System (GIS) to provide users with access to an assortment of analytical tools that are useful for a variety of water-resources planning and management purposes, and for engineering and design purposes. In version 3 as well as beta version 4, StreamStats users can select USGS data-collection station locations shown on a map and obtain previously published information for the stations, including descriptive information, and previously published basin characteristics and streamflow statistics." -- from the StreamStats website, 1/25/2017

Description: "Green infrastructure practices maintain or restore stormwater's natural flow pattern by allowing the water to slowly permeate into the ground and be used by plants. These practices include rain gardens, vegetated swales, green roofs and porous pavements. Green infrastructure also includes preserving or restoring natural areas, such as forests, stream buffers and wetlands, and reducing the size of paved surfaces. Green infrastructure generally includes "better site design" or "low impact development" stormwater projects." -- from the website, 9/13/2015

Description: "It is estimated that as of the mid-1990s, there are approximately 2.4 million acres of wetlands in New York. Some areas, like the Adirondacks and the Lake Plains of western New York contain more wetlands because there are larger expanses of flat topography. Other areas, like the Appalachian Highlands, the Hudson Valley, and Long Island, contain relatively fewer wetlands. DEC began a study in the mid-1990s to assess the current status and trends in the freshwater wetlands resource in New York. The Wetland Status and Trend Analysis of New York State Study (PDF)(2.3 MB) compared mid-1980s and mid-1990s aerial photography for a sample of quadrangles in five ecological zones of the state to determine the amount of wetlands; gains, losses or changes in covertype; and to what those changes could be attributed." -- from the website, 9/26/2015

Description: "A Local Waterfront Revitalization Program is both a plan and a program. The term refers to both a planning document prepared by a community, as well as the program established to implement the plan. The Program may be comprehensive and address all issues that affect a community's entire waterfront or it may address the most critical issues facing a significant portion of its waterfront." -- from the website, 9/16/2015

Description: "EPA implements sustainable stormwater management, also called low impact development (LID) or green infrastructure, at its facilities. Sustainable stormwater management focuses on reducing runoff and improving water quality. LID practices help maintain natural hydrologic cycles through site grading, vegetation, soils and natural processes that absorb and filter stormwater onsite. They also help minimize erosion, flooding and water pollution downstream from EPA facilities." -- from the website, 1/22/2017
