Description: "As one of the cornerstones of the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) National Geospatial Program, The National Map is a collaborative effort among the USGS and other Federal, State, and local partners to improve and deliver topographic information for the Nation. It has many uses ranging from recreation to scientific analysis to emergency response. The National Map is easily accessible for display on the Web, as products and services, and as downloadable data. The geographic information available from The National Map includes orthoimagery (aerial photographs), elevation, geographic names, hydrography, boundaries, transportation, structures, and land cover." -- from the website, 1/24/2017

Description: "In 2014, the third National Climate Assessment clearly described climate change as a threat to human health and well-being. Climate change is predicted to result in more extreme heat events, more frequent and violent weather disasters, decreased air quality and more insect-related disease. And, the Assessment states that some of the health impacts of climate change are already happening in the United States. Health effects related to climate will worsen existing health problems as well as introduce new and serious risks to the public’s health. " -- from the website, 1/27/2017 CDC Library's link to "Adaptation in action : grantee success stories from CDC’s climate and health program," a report by the American Public Health Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. "...Work is well underway to find new, low-cost and creative ways to adapt to the challenges of climate change, and protect our communities from related disease and injury. Leading such work is the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Climate and Health Program, as well as a handful of pioneering state and local public health departments across the country. Adapting to climate change will require collaborative action on a large scale and across many different sectors. Public health professionals are perfectly suited to this task. ..." -- from the website, 1/27/2017

Description: "The Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services has been measuring sea level for over 150 years, with tide stations of the National Water Level Observation Network operating on all U.S. coasts. Changes in Mean Sea Level (MSL), either a sea level rise or sea level fall, have been computed at 128 long-term water level stations using a minimum span of 30 years of observations at each location. These measurements have been averaged by month to remove the effect of higher frequency phenomena (e.g. storm surge) in order to compute an accurate linear sea level trend. The trend analysis has also been extended to 240 global tide stations using data from the Permanent Service for Mean Sea Level (PSMSL)." -- from the website, 9/9/2015

Description: "The U.S. Climate Resilience Toolkit is a website designed to help people find and use tools, information, and subject matter expertise to build climate resilience. The Toolkit offers information from all across the U.S. federal government in one easy-to-use location. The goal is to improve people’s ability to understand and manage their climate-related risks and opportunities, and to help them make their communities and businesses more resilient to extreme events. The site was built in response to the President’s Climate Action Plan and Executive Order 13653 (Preparing the United States for the Impacts of Climate Change), which calls for the federal government to “...develop and provide authoritative, easily accessible, usable, and timely data, information, and decision-support tools on climate preparedness and resilience” to support federal, regional, state, local, tribal, private-sector, and nonprofit-sector efforts to prepare for the impacts of climate change." -- from the website, 9/9/2015

Description: "... Across the contiguous United States, and especially in the Northeast, the amount of precipitation falling in very heavy events has increased significantly over the last century. During heavy rains, huge volumes of water fill drainage systems quickly, and can overwhelm installed culverts ... When a culvert cannot convey the amount of water attempting to flow through it, water typically backs up on the upstream side, causing localized flooding. The accumulated water may overflow across the roadway, disrupting transportation and increasing erosion that can wash out the culvert..." -- from the website, 1/24/2017

Description: "A synthesis of literature results indicates that invasive, noxious weeds on the whole have a larger than expected growth increase to both recent and projected increases in atmospheric C02 relative to other plant species. There is also evidence that rising CO2 can, in fact, preferentially select for invasive, noxious species within plant communities. Furthermore, there is initial data suggesting that control of such weeds may be more difficult in the future. However, the small number of available experiments make such conclusions problematic, and emphasize the urgent need for additional studies to address the biological and economic uncertainties associated with CO2-induced changes in the ecology of invasive, noxious weeds." -- from the website, 1/24/2017

Description: "Stormwater is water from rain or melting snow that doesn't soak into the ground but runs off into waterways. It flows from rooftops, over paved areas and bare soil, and through sloped lawns while picking up a variety of materials on its way. The quality of runoff is affected by a variety of factors and depends on the season, local meteorology, geography and upon activities which lie in the path of the flow." -- from the website, 9/26/2015

Description: "Choices we make now can reduce our risks while building and diversifying our economy. To help minimize risks from climate change, New York State has set two goals: 1.) Reduce emissions of heat-trapping greenhouse gases by 80 percent from 1990 levels, by the year 2050 ("80 by 50"), and 2.) Improve resilience to climate change in all the state's communities. Emission reduction choices include energy-efficient products, building weatherization and renewable energy generation. All these choices lower New York's greenhouse gas emissions while creating jobs and boosting economic vitality. Climate resilience choices mean adapting built and natural environments to withstand new conditions and recover from extreme events. The economic activity this adaptation generates helps to balance some climate-related costs. State programs are helping New Yorkers benefit from decisions that reduce emissions and improve climate resilience. State plans and projects aim to keep our environment and economy thriving as the climate changes." -- from the website, 9/26/2015
