New York Climate Change Science Web Archive

Collected by: Cornell University Library

Archived since: May, 2014

Description:

New York State is poised to become a leader in planning for and adapting to the impacts of climate change. Climate change science is a broad and diverse field, and sorting through and understanding the amount and detail of scientific information available is a challenge to scientists, engineers, policy makers and practitioners alike. To address these challenges the Northeast States for Coordinated Air Use Management (NESCAUM), Cornell University, State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) and the federal National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) have teamed up to create the New York Climate Change Science Clearinghouse (NYCCSC). Funded by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), the NYCCSC will be a regional, web-based interface for accessing data, documents, maps and information relevant to climate change adaptation and mitigation across New York State. Because the site is meant as a portal for discovery of a broad range of information held and maintained elsewhere, this collection will serve as an archive of the changing content climate change websites relevant to and discoverable via the NYCCSC.

URL: http://coastalmanagement.noaa.gov/initiatives/shoreline_ppr_retreat.html

Description: "Managed or planned retreat allows the shoreline to advance inward unimpeded. As the shore erodes, buildings and other infrastructure are either demolished or relocated inland. Coastal managers realize that in many situations attempting to stop erosion through structural or non-structural solutions is a losing battle. Shoreline protection efforts and/or their repeated maintenance would be too costly and ultimately ineffective at preventing further erosion. A managed retreat approach typically involves establishing thresholds to trigger demolition or relocation of structures threatened by erosion. Therefore, this approach is frequently coupled with several other planning and regulatory techniques..." -- from the website, 8/5/2015

URL: http://fpr.vermont.gov/forest/ecosystem/climate_change/

Description: "The world’s climate has been changing and even more change is predicted. One of the major greenhouse gases (GHGs) contributing to climate change is carbon dioxide (CO2). Forests play an important role in reducing carbon in the air as they take in CO2 through photosynthesis and store carbon in their wood, branches, foliage, and roots. Carbon can be stored for extended periods of time in trees and in soils (what is referred to as “carbon stock”), and healthy trees continue to take in additional CO2 on a yearly basis (referred to as “carbon sequestration”). Maintaining and increasing forestland and engaging in community tree plantings can help reduce GHG emissions." -- from the website, 1/18/2017
