Description: Welcome to the Michigan Center for Translational Pathology. At MCTP, we are committed to the discovery of the genetic factors involved in the development of a wide variety of diseases, including prostate cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, colon cancer, and skin cancer, among others. We actively pursue advances in the early detection and treatment of various types of cancer and other diseases, with the eventual goal of creating new targeted therapies. The landmark investigations of our research team, under the leadership of Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan, revealed the probable origins of prostate cancer; and this was just the beginning of our unprecedented, creative approach to unlock the secrets of disease development hidden within the human genome. By combining cutting- edge research techniques in areas such as genomics, proteomics, coupled with innovative bioinformatics techniques and high- throughput analysis for identification of critical biomarkers, we tackle the mysteries of disease development and open the doorway of discovery for the treatment of human disease.

Description: "The National Poverty Center (NPC) was established in the fall of 2002 as a university-based, nonpartisan research center. We conduct and promote multidisciplinary, policy-relevant research on the causes and consequences of poverty and provide mentoring and training to young scholars. Located within the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, the NPC benefits from close proximity to an extensive and diverse group of University of Michigan-based scholars from such units as the Institute for Social Research; the Department of Economics; and the Schools of Education, Public Health, and Social Work. In addition, the NPC draws on the work of over forty nationally recognized scholars from around the country, our Senior Research Affiliates. Major funding for the NPC is provided through a cooperative agreement with the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. University of Michigan funders include the Ford School, the Office of the Vice- President for Research, the Institute for Social Research, and the Rackham School of Graduate Studies."

Description: The Nichols Arboretum Peony Garden is the largest public collection of historic (pre-1950) peony cultivars in North America. We are rebuilding this historic garden to be an internationally significant living reference collection. In the next few years you'll see changes to the peony garden area as we rejuvenate it to tell the story of peonies - in nature and as perceived by diverse cultures. We're accomplishing this in the conceptual framework initiated in the 1920s when both herbaceous and tree peony collections were planned. We will retain the historic design of the main beds but reorganize certain beds with themes. Classic tree peonies from Asian cultures as well as modern American and European selections will be grouped on the nearby slopes of Laurel Ridge. Wild species - many at risk in their native habitats - will give us the complete range to tell the the story of peonies. Website includes information about the history of peonies at U-M, peony organization, and resources for cultivating peonies.

Description: "The "American Intervention in Northern Russia, 1918-1919," nicknamed the "Polar Bear Expedition," was a U.S. military intervention in northern Russia at the end of World War I. Since many of these soldiers originated from Michigan, the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan, an archive documenting Michigan history, has collected materials related to this event since the 1960s. The Bentley has amassed one of the largest groups of materials on this topic, consisting of over sixty individual collections of primary source material as well as numerous published materials. In 2004, the Bentley proposed a project to digitize all of the Polar Bear materials in order to increase access as well as protect and secure the fragile originals. In 2005, faculty and students from the University of Michigan School of Information began a research project investigating next generation finding aids. The Polar Bear Expedition Digital Collections are the first example of rethinking traditional archival finding aids to provide better access to primary sources on the web. We are experimenting with different ideas for displaying archival content as well as implementing added functions so that researchers can interact with online collections using collaborative tools."

Description: In 1950, the University of Michigan formally established the School of Natural Resources, the first of its kind in the world, but the study of natural resources and environmental problems has been part of the University for over 100 years. Fittingly, the school changed its name to the School of Natural Resources and Environment (SNRE) in 1992. In 2016, the newly formed School for Environment and Sustainability (SEAS) replaced the SNRE. "The School for Environment and Sustainability's overarching objective is to contribute to the protection of the Earth's resources and the achievement of a sustainable society." The school remains an international leader in educating students to be innovative and effective stewards of the environment. This site provides information on resources, courses, and programs available from the School.
