Description: The applied Medical Device Institute (aMDI), founded in 2015, is a non-instructional unit within the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing (PCEC) at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). Their mission is devoted to the betterment of human health and well-being through innovation and commercialization of medical devices, healthcare solutions, and serving related industries. aMDI provides a full range of services, including but not limited to: developing analytical and physical models; rapid prototyping and fabricating systems; comprehensive testing for technical feasibility; and innovate research and development space. aMDI addresses business and market viability issue in collaboration with other entrepreneurial, regulatory, investment, and business architecture entities. Commercialization is facilitated at aMDI by connecting to the region's existing commercialization and financing organizations. In addition to the physicians, nurses, and clinicians, aMDI serves small companies as a contract “R&D department” and large companies by providing responsive intellectual capacity to meet the demands of unforeseen business cycles or emerging technologies.

Description: Anthropology is the study and understanding of humans in all places and throughout time, including the effects of culture on individuals and of individuals on their society. Anthropology offers a perspective for critically analyzing culture and prepares students for multicultural career settings in the United States and abroad. An anthropology major and minor are available. The wide scope and holistic nature of anthropology mean that students should have opportunities to experience three kinds of coursework: (1) courses concerned with the discipline; (2) courses specializing in a subdiscipline of anthropology; and (3) courses in disciplines related to anthropology. The anthropology program regularly sponsors field schools in archaeology and cultural anthropology. These programs are locally based and accessible to commuters as well as on campus students. Local and international internships are available. Occasional opportunities for out-of-country fieldwork are also available. Post-field independent research opportunities are available through the Anthropology Lab, which houses a collection of over 200,000 artifacts from over 100 sites.

Description: Archaeologist’s study of the breadth and diversity of human experience through analysis of material culture, from the earliest appearance of humankind to the recent past. The Archaeology Minor at Grand Valley is a collaborative interdepartmental program. The interdepartmental minor in Archaeology is a student-centered, inquiry-based program concerned with the study of the human experience from the earliest appearance of humankind to the very recent past. The program aims to become a regional center for archaeology by continuing to maintain and build faculty-student research and service-learning opportunities, and by continuing to build connections to the broader community through their ties with professional outreach organizations such as the Conference on Michigan Archaeology, the Archaeological Institute of America, and the American Schools of Oriental Research.

Description: Housed in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Department of Visual and Media Arts is also an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD). This association establishes national art and design standards for undergraduate (and graduate) degree programs like ours. 682 majors are enrolled in five programs offering ten different degrees. Located in two buildings on the GVSU campus, the department is equipped with the specialized equipment necessary to complete work in traditional and new media. Students’ efforts in the program are supported by twenty-four, full-time faculty members and a dedicated staff.

Description: The Department strives to set a standard of excellence in biology and natural resources education as a unit within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. They offer undergraduate degrees in Biology or Natural Resources Management, and a graduate degree in Biology. Description: The Biosafety Program at Grand Valley State University is a collaborative effort aimed at providing guidelines and information for the safe use of biohazardous and potentially biohazardous materials. The goal of the program is to ensure that all research, teaching, and clinical activities involving the use of biohazardous materials are in compliance with regulatory requirements and applicable University policies. The GVSU Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is responsible for ensuring that biohazardous agents are used safely and in accordance with state and federal regulations as well as GVSU policies. The IBC establishes policies and evaluates procedures, proposals, and records. Day-to-day operations are overseen by the University’s Biosafety Officer. The IBC is part of the University’s Research Protections Program and reports to the University Provost.

Description: Classics is the interdisciplinary study of ancient Greece and Rome. Student-centered and inquiry-based, the program in Classics fosters the continual exploration of and critical inquiry into the living traditions and legacies of the Greco-Roman world. The program in Classics spans the many different aspects of the Greek and Roman world - its languages and literatures, its art and archaeology, its history, its religious and philosophical traditions, its social and legal forms - from the Bronze Age to the period of the late Roman Empire and early Christianity. For students who pursue a major or minor, Classics provides a solid liberal arts education that will be useful in many careers and vital to the development of their full human capacity. For students in other disciplines, Classics offers a valuable opportunity to investigate the works and traditions that have provided much of the background of their own chosen fields. Many find that working with the classical languages improves their skills as readers and writers.

Description: The Bachelor of Science in Cell and Molecular Biology at Grand Valley prepares students for employment or graduate training in the critically important and dynamic fields of cell and molecular biology, biotechnology, and biomedical research. Cell and molecular biology (CMB) is for students with a passion for the life sciences and research who want to prepare for employment in their field or for graduate/professional training. CMB is focused on determining how cells develop and function and the significance of those functions in the living organism. This interdisciplinary study draws on diverse fields such as biochemistry, biophysics, genetics, and developmental biology and is the basis for many applied fields including biotechnology, pharmacology, and biomedicine. A unique and critical part of Grand Valley’s CMB degree is the student’s participation in independent research/internship. Each student will have a research mentor from CMB or another participating GVSU department or from an area business or research institute, ensuring that students will get practical experience conducting original research in their area of interest.

Description: The SAP® Certification Academy is one of the unique aspects of The ERP Initiative at Grand Valley State University. This intensive two-week (10 day) Academy, during GVSU's spring/summer term, is offered at just a handful of universities across North America. Both business and non-business students completing the Academy and passing the SAP® Certification exam will have the advantage of a good understanding of business processes adopted by companies around the world. In addition to the knowledge they gain, participants also demonstrate their interest in and aptitude for working with SAP® or other ERP systems. Only students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate academic program at an SAP® University Alliance institution (Grand Valley is such an institution), are eligible to participate. This is an intense educational experience, and it is essential that participants be proficient with business processes and SAP® ERP through one or more of the following (with a B or better): MGT 351 or BUS 610. On the final day of the Academy, students will sit for the SAP® exam. The typical pass rate for the exam is 65%; however, the academy at GVSU has boasted an above average pass rate for several years, with several years at 100%.

Description: The exercise science major is designed to help students gain a comprehensive understanding of how and why the human body responds to a single bout or regular bouts of physical activity or exercise, through foundations in biomechanics, physiology, and psychology. Along with three other degree programs - Athletic Training, Physical Education, and Sport Management – the exercise science major is housed within the Movement Science Department. At its inception in 2006, the exercise science program had two tenure track faculty and 75 students, and the same two emphasis areas it has today - 'Clinical' and 'Health Fitness Instruction'. To date, the program has 15 full-time faculty, including nine tenure track faculty, and over 1,000 students across both emphasis areas.

Description: The purpose of Grand Valley State University’s Art and Science of Aging Conference is to broaden the dialogue on aging in West Michigan, provide new knowledge and skills, derived from multidisciplinary research and evidence-based best practices on healthy aging to the community, highlight important local resources and strategies for optimizing later life, and prepare individuals and professionals in their community for the coming surging growth of older adults. The mission of the Art & Science of Aging Conference is to broaden the dialogue within the West Michigan region on the positive potentials of later life and holistic approaches to healthy aging and serve as an interdisciplinary and inter-professional forum of research on aging topics and best practices in working with and for the older adult. Their goal is to share all available resources from past conferences to enrich the aging-related knowledge base of Grand Rapids community and worldwide. They want to encourage multidisciplinary research, while discovering and presenting evidence-based best practices on healthy aging to the community.

Description: Hack Your Campus is an entrepreneurial competition in which students can make their mark on GVSU. The competition asks students to submit ideas for improving some aspect of GVSU campus or services as part of a competitive pitching event. Ideas can either improve existing programs or services or propose entirely new ones. The best ideas earn substantial cash prizes! Hack Your Campus was developed collaboratively by staff and students in the GVSU University Libraries and the Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. The organizer’s vision was to provide students with an opportunity to practice innovation and communication skills while also channeling some of their creative energy towards improving the campus. The competition is designed to be fun, low-investment, and to allow for the maximum amount of creative freedom while still encouraging students to develop ideas that are at least theoretically implementable.

Description: The mission of the Frederik Meijer Honors College is to inspire and empower motivated students to be intellectually curious lifelong learners who make positive contributions to their local and global communities and serve as capable leaders and active global citizens. The Frederik Meijer Honors College is an alternative general education program for students who wish to make the most of their college career. Many of the program classes are interdisciplinary and team-taught while utilizing smaller class sizes to elicit greater discussion. These smaller classes, coupled with the fact that many professors hold office hours nearby, foster a deeper personal connection between students and professors. Another feature of the curriculum is an active schedule of co-curricular activities, both on campus and off. The Honors College also includes an integrated living and learning environment promoting intellectual curiosity and an enthusiasm for learning that will live on well beyond our students' undergraduate years. The Glenn A. Niemeyer Learning and Living Center offers students the opportunity to take classes in the same building in which they live. The Honors Office, Honors Director, and many professors' offices are in the Niemeyer building as well, giving students quick and easy access to all resources available.

Description: The Injury Care Clinic (ICC) exists as a partnership between GVSU Recreation & Wellness, GVSU Movement Science, Metro Health, and NovaCare Rehabilitation. Description: The Kaufman Interfaith Institute offers a broad range of programming (over 200 events/initiatives each year) that seeks to create a more inclusive and equitable West Michigan Community for persons of diverse cultural and religious/secular/spiritual identities. The Kaufman Interfaith Institute is part of a rich history of interfaith dialogue in West Michigan. In 1989, respected community leader Sylvia Kaufman initiated a Jewish-Christian dialogue as part of the centennial celebration of the Jewish community’s presence in Muskegon, Michigan. Since that time, hundreds of premier scholars, clergy, citizens, and students from the Jewish, Christian, and Muslim faiths have come together every three years for a conference, now known as the Jewish/Christian/Muslim Triennial Interfaith Dialogue. This led eventually to the establishment of the Sylvia and Richard Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley State University in 2007.

Description: The Integrated Science Elementary program is being replaced by the PCKET (Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Elementary Teaching) program. The Integrated Science (ISCI) Program at Grand Valley State University provides K-12 teacher training in science education. It offers an Integrated Science Elementary Education Major for K-8 certification, and an Integrated Science Secondary Education Major for 6-12 certification. ISCI students learn content and pedagogy in science education through active learning in the ISCI course curriculum, and during authentic field, service learning and scholarship experiences. All faculty emphasize, and students are fully immersed in Michigan's K-12 Science Standards, which are based on the Next Generation Science Standards. Integrated Science faculty engage students in discipline-specific scholarly activity and research, leading to publication and presentation opportunities. The ISCI Program at GVSU is dedicated to developing and supporting the highest quality K-12 science teachers and their classrooms.

Description: In the mid-1980's Dorothy Armstrong was involved in the Office of International Affairs, now known as the Padnos International Center. The first recorded participants went to Kingston University (previously, Kingston Polytechnic) during the summer of 1986. After the summer program in 1986, Bob Godfrey from Kingston Polytechnic made a visit to GVSU to connect with the institutions that had sent students to the summer school. Brian Curry, Professor of Biomedical Sciences, served as his host during his visit. This was the start of the biomedical science exchanges. This partnership has seen involvement from departments across the university from biomedical sciences, health sciences, nursing, English, history, writing, communications, business, public administration, criminal justice, student life, art, career services, counseling, facilities, financial aid, computer & information systems, music, geography and planning, crew, movement sciences, alumni relations, and engineering.

Description: In 1989, the counties of Kent, Ottawa, and Muskegon, under Michigan's Intergovernmental Cooperation Act, formed the Kent-Ottawa-Muskegon Foreign-Trade Zone (KOM-FTZ) Authority to apply for the federal Foreign Trade Zone program to both existing and new companies within KOM's geographic area. These counties located within the core of West Michigan recognized the need to offer the local business community the benefits available through a Foreign-Trade Zone. The KOM-FTZ is a tool used to stimulate economic growth and development in West Michigan. The KOM-FTZ is designed to enhance the competitiveness of West Michigan by encouraging companies to maintain and expand their operations in the region by utilizing the benefits of this federal tool.

Description: Latin American and Latino/a Studies is an interdisciplinary exploration of the economies, histories, literatures, cultural productions, politics, societies, and ecologies of Latin America. It wants to educate students and the university community about Latino/a and Latin American matters with our courses and event programming, support internationalization, diversity, and interdisciplinary efforts on campus and in the community, promote an increase the size of the Latino/a and Latin American student body, faculty and staff, and serve and educate West Michigan communities. The LAS Program enhances GVSU's relations with the regional Latino/a community.

Description: The Latino/a Studies certificate program at Grand Valley State University is designed to increase students' knowledge of the diverse histories, demographics, and cultures among Latinos/as in the United States. Students take a total of 15 credit hours, including “Introduction to Latino/a Studies” and “Latinos/as In West Michigan,” the latter of which includes a community engagement component. In addition to these two required courses, students choose electives from disciplines like English, History, Criminal Justice, Social Work, and Spanish, and may elect to do an internship.

Description: Math in Action presents lively and informative discussions of current issues in mathematics education while providing an opportunity for practicing PreK – 12 teachers, prospective teachers, curriculum directors, and college and university faculty to share ideas, concerns, and resources. SCECH credits are available for most sessions. The conference consists of four hour long sessions.
