Description: The applied Medical Device Institute (aMDI), founded in 2015, is a non-instructional unit within the Padnos College of Engineering and Computing (PCEC) at Grand Valley State University (GVSU). Their mission is devoted to the betterment of human health and well-being through innovation and commercialization of medical devices, healthcare solutions, and serving related industries. aMDI provides a full range of services, including but not limited to: developing analytical and physical models; rapid prototyping and fabricating systems; comprehensive testing for technical feasibility; and innovate research and development space. aMDI addresses business and market viability issue in collaboration with other entrepreneurial, regulatory, investment, and business architecture entities. Commercialization is facilitated at aMDI by connecting to the region's existing commercialization and financing organizations. In addition to the physicians, nurses, and clinicians, aMDI serves small companies as a contract “R&D department” and large companies by providing responsive intellectual capacity to meet the demands of unforeseen business cycles or emerging technologies.

Title: Anthropology Department

Description: Anthropology is the study and understanding of humans in all places and throughout time, including the effects of culture on individuals and of individuals on their society. Anthropology offers a perspective for critically analyzing culture and prepares students for multicultural career settings in the United States and abroad. An anthropology major and minor are available. The wide scope and holistic nature of anthropology mean that students should have opportunities to experience three kinds of coursework: (1) courses concerned with the discipline; (2) courses specializing in a subdiscipline of anthropology; and (3) courses in disciplines related to anthropology. The anthropology program regularly sponsors field schools in archaeology and cultural anthropology. These programs are locally based and accessible to commuters as well as on campus students. Local and international internships are available. Occasional opportunities for out-of-country fieldwork are also available. Post-field independent research opportunities are available through the Anthropology Lab, which houses a collection of over 200,000 artifacts from over 100 sites.

The GVSU Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) is responsible for ensuring that biohazardous agents are used safely and in accordance with state and federal regulations as well as GVSU policies. The IBC establishes policies and evaluates procedures, proposals, and records. Day-to-day operations are overseen by the University’s Biosafety Officer. The IBC is part of the University’s Research Protections Program and reports to the University Provost.

In June of 2015, the Colloquy administration transitioned to Grand Valley's Office of the Vice Provost for Health under the direction of Dr. Jean Nagelkerk, PhD, FNP, FNAP. Description: Established in 1973, COST is a collaboration of 16 colleges and universities in the United States that provides opportunities for its students to have quality student teaching experiences in overseas settings. Grand Valley State University currently serves as headquarters and coordinates international placements. COST works closely with university and school representatives from the United States and around the world to promote global understanding, intercultural communication, and a meaningful educational experience. Through COST, teacher candidates are placed in public and private institutions in various locations around the world where English is the language of instruction. Description: The SAP® Certification Academy is one of the unique aspects of The ERP Initiative at Grand Valley State University. This intensive two-week (10 day) Academy, during GVSU's spring/summer term, is offered at just a handful of universities across North America. Both business and non-business students completing the Academy and passing the SAP® Certification exam will have the advantage of a good understanding of business processes adopted by companies around the world. In addition to the knowledge they gain, participants also demonstrate their interest in and aptitude for working with SAP® or other ERP systems. Only students enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate academic program at an SAP® University Alliance institution (Grand Valley is such an institution), are eligible to participate. This is an intense educational experience, and it is essential that participants be proficient with business processes and SAP® ERP through one or more of the following (with a B or better): MGT 351 or BUS 610. On the final day of the Academy, students will sit for the SAP® exam. The typical pass rate for the exam is 65%; however, the academy at GVSU has boasted an above average pass rate for several years, with several years at 100%.

The first recorded participants went to Kingston University (previously, Kingston Polytechnic) during the summer of 1986. After the summer program in 1986, Bob Godfrey from Kingston Polytechnic made a visit to GVSU to connect with the institutions that had sent students to the summer school. Brian Curry, Professor of Biomedical Sciences, served as his host during his visit. This was the start of the biomedical science exchanges. Description: In 1989, the counties of Kent, Ottawa, and Muskegon, under Michigan's Intergovernmental Cooperation Act, formed the Kent-Ottawa-Muskegon Foreign-Trade Zone (KOM-FTZ) Authority to apply for the federal Foreign Trade Zone program to both existing and new companies within KOM's geographic area. These counties located within the core of West Michigan recognized the need to offer the local business community the benefits available through a Foreign-Trade Zone. The KOM-FTZ is a tool used to stimulate economic growth and development in West Michigan. The KOM-FTZ is designed to enhance the competitiveness of West Michigan by encouraging companies to maintain and expand their operations in the region by utilizing the benefits of this federal tool.
