Williams Class of 1966 Environmental Center Website

Collected by: Williams College

Archived since: Apr, 2016

Description:

In early 2011, the Kellogg Building Committee and Black River Design, the architect, began design efforts with a thorough evaluation of needs for a project that will house the Center for Environmental Studies and the Zilkha Center for Environmental Initiatives. The Committee determined the program requirements, found opportunities for synergy among spaces, and minimized energy demands of the combined Centers. Integrated Eco Strategy a consulting firm with growing expertise in LBC buildings was hired to help shepherd the college through the LBC process. In February 2015, the building opened. Staff and faculty moved into their offices, student groups started convening in the various meeting rooms, and students soon found their favorite corners in which to study.

The building program maximizes the use of space, minimizes energy and water demand, and uses on-site solar energy and rooftop water collection to produce 100% of the energy and water required for the environmental center. Offices are small, but sized appropriately for their planned use. Larger rooms play triple duty – they serve as classroom and meeting rooms during the academic day, student study spaces and work rooms in the evenings, and social and informal gathering spaces for faculty, students, staff and alumni throughout the year.

University of California, San Francisco Websites

Collected by: University of California, San Francisco (UCSF)

Archived since: Oct, 2015

Description:

The mission of the UC San Francisco (UCSF) Archives and Special Collections is to identify, collect, preserve, and maintain rare and unique materials to support research and teaching in the history of the health sciences and the UCSF. The UCSF Archives were formally established in 1963 when UC President Clark Kerr mandated the creation of both a records management and an archives program in the University. The Archives serve as the official repository for the preservation of selected records, printed and born-digital materials, and realia generated by or about the UCSF, including all four schools, the Graduate Division, and the UCSF Medical Center. The UCSF Web Archive preserves websites in the “ucsf.edu” domain to document the history of the University’s activities and accomplishments. The vast majority of documentation on UCSF’s schools and programs that Archives collected in paper form in the past (e.g. course catalogs, announcements from each school, student publications, etc.) is now presented on the web. In many cases, it is presented exclusively online and no print copy is produced. Since its inception in 2007 this project has been capturing the websites of the University’s administration, schools, the Graduate Division and the UCSF Medical Center, academic departments, administrative units, organized research units, and student organizations. The University Archives, through the Archive-It web archiving service, preserves these documents and makes them available for research and instruction. The University of California, San Francisco is a leading university dedicated to promoting health worldwide through advanced biomedical research, graduate-level education in the life sciences and health professions, and excellence in patient care. It includes top-ranked graduate schools of dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy, a graduate division with nationally renowned programs in basic, biomedical, translational and population sciences, as well as a preeminent biomedical research enterprise and two top-ranked hospitals, UCSF Medical Center and UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco. UC San Francisco is the only campus in the 10-campus University of California system that is exclusively focused on the health sciences.

Science Colloquium: Energy in Transition

Collected by: University of Oregon

Archived since: Jan, 2012

Description:

This course is a collaborative project with the goal of understanding how past societies have adapted to widespread changes in their foods and fuels, and how our current society can learn from their successes and failures in the contemporary global energy context.

Part of our job is to determine which energy sources are currently in transition, and which are not; which are under pressure to be changed, what those pressures are, and how energy policy might work either to promote or to hinder these changes. We will be particularly interested in ways that groups of people make hard choices, or don't, in the face of energy scarcity.

Philip G. Zimbardo

Collected by: Stanford University Archives

Archived since: Apr, 2015

Description:

Websites documenting the career of Philip G. Zimbardo, professor of psychology (emeritus) Stanford University. Philip Zimbardo is perhaps best known for the Stanford Prison Experiment, conducted in the basement of the Stanford University psychology department in 1971. The participants in the study were 24 male college students who were randomly assigned to act either as guards or prisoners in the mock prison. The study was initially slated to last two weeks, but had to be terminated after just six days because of the extreme reactions and behaviors of the participants. The guards began displaying cruel and sadistic behavior toward the prisoners, while the prisoners became depressed and hopeless. Since the famous prison experiment, Zimbardo has continued to conduct research on a variety of topics including shyness, cult behavior and heroism. He has a authored and co-authored numerous books, including some that are widely used in university level psychology courses. Some people may recognize him as the host of the Discovering Psychology video series, which has aired on PBS and is often used in high school and college psychology classes. In 2002, Zimbardo was elected president of the American Psychological Association. After more than 50 years of teaching, Zimbardo retired from Stanford in 2003 but gave his last Exploring Human Nature lecture on March 7, 2007. Today, he continues to work as the director of the organization he founded called the Heroic Imagination Project. The organization promotes research, education and media initiatives designed to inspire ordinary people to act as heroes and agents of social change.
