Description:
In November 2019, NBC's Meet the Press announced a County to County project, where they would embed reporters in five communities around the country to capture views on the presidential election in 2020. Kent County, Michigan was identified as one of those communities, and local citizens were interviewed for the project. In general, Michigan and Grand Rapids were noted as important places to watch for the 2020 presidential election.

ArtPrize is an open, independently organized international art competition which takes place for 19 days every other fall in Grand Rapids, Michigan. ArtPrize began in 2009 and, at the time, awarded the largest art prize in the world, $250,000. The competition is open to anyone, and prize money is awarded through public voting and juried awards.

"Barbara Vander Mark (3/27/1950 - 1/15/2017) was a native and long-time resident of Grand Rapids. She graduated from Central High School's class of 1968 and attended Western Michigan University. She spent most of her professional life with the City of Grand Rapids, working in various capacities in the Police Department, Public Housing Office and City Assessor's Office. She had a sharp mind and high standards. Ms. Vander Mark loved genealogy and local history. She maintained a website for public use full of noteworthy information on Grand Rapids' historic neighborhoods, street maps, fire barns and public schools. She made presentations at the Grand Rapids Public Library and assembled a book of local genealogy materials for the library." -Quoted from Ms. Vander Mark's obituary.

Comprised of more than 250 individuals from throughout the community, the organization was active from 1993 to 2017. Its primary objectives were “to identify downtown building and revitalization projects, to galvanize public opinion and support for these projects, and to design and implement funding strategies for each project, including securing enough private sector support to guarantee funding from existing public funds.” Major projects supported by Grand Action include Van Andel Arena, DeVos Place, Meijer Majestic Theatre, MSU Medical School and the Downtown Market.

The Grand Rapids Torch Club was founded in 1928 and was in existence until 2015. It was the 23rd club founded as part of the International Association of Torch Clubs. The purpose of the Torch Club is to provide a forum where people from a variety of professions can meet, enjoy good fellowship in a relaxed setting, inform each other, and expand each other's horizons. The Grand Rapids Torch Club website includes information about the organization and listings of programs from 2005-2015.
