Remembering 1916, Recording 2016

Archived since: Mar, 2022

Description:

The “Remembering 1916, Recording 2016” project formed part of the National Library of Ireland’s programme for commemorations in 2016. The project was the largest undertaken by the library to date and was made possible by funding from the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. During 2016, the NLI captured and preserved the content of websites that recorded the 2016 commemorations and also websites that reflected the events in Ireland in 2016. This included sites relating to the official Ireland 2016 programme of formal events commemorating and reflecting on the centenary of the 1916 Rising as well as local, national and international cultural and creative events. The collection reflected the diverse and unique nature of the 2016 commemorations. “Remembering 1916, Recording 2016” also captured the Irish experience of World War 1 including the commemorative programme marking the centenary of the Battle of the Somme. In November 2016, the NLI launched an online appeal for members of the public to submit suggestions of websites to be included in the National Web Archive. The public were asked what websites they felt best remembered the events of 1916 and what websites they felt best recorded life in Ireland in 2016. The top ten websites were archived by the NLI on the 16th December and form part of the “Remembering 1916, Recording 2016” collection.
