Description: Indeed, chunks of King's famous Aug. 28, 1963, "Dream" speech were test-driven in Wait Chapel during his visit to Wake Forest University on Oct. 11, 1962. A recording of that speech, which languished in the university's archives for more than 30 years, has been dusted off and digitized and is now available for anyone to hear on the university's website.

Description: On January 27, 2017, President Donald Trump signed a discriminatory executive order banning immigrants of predominantly Muslim backgrounds from entering the United States. In response to this order, lawyers from the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Immigration Law Center worked pro bono at airport demonstrations across the country to argue before a federal court and win an emergency stay on a portion of the order.... We are writing to express deep dissatisfaction with the official response issued by University President Nathan O. Hatch in response to these political developments—an affirmation which is careful not to oppose the political commitments of university investors, but which does not go far enough to openly condemn this ban.

Leading this center since its founding in January 2012 easily has been the greatest privilege of my academic and professional career. -Melissa Harris Perry This means every American traveling across the globe today carries along Anna Julia Cooper; a black woman born in North Carolina in the final decade of American slavery. Now from nine to eleven courses are offered each year with a total enrollment each semester of 50 to 70 students. At present, the Arabic Program is staffed by two full-time professors and a Fulbright teaching assistant whose offerings cover various aspects of language, literature, and culture.

Description: A student at Wake Forest University has called North Carolina home since she was 7 years old, when her mother brought her into the United States without authorization. “Maybe to some people I’m not supposed to be here, but I have built a life here. “This is my home. I count,” she said. The student, who attends Wake Forest on private scholarships and does not take public money to pay for tuition, asked not to be identified because she is afraid that actions taken this week on illegal immigration by President Donald Trump could eventually affect her.

Description: As Wake Forest continues to navigate a phase change in our COVID-19 management — from emergency response to ongoing mitigation — it has reached a transition point to begin integrating and embedding our work of the past two years into existing operations. As such, President Susan Wente has endorsed the creation of a Campus Health Committee, a cross-functional group convened to support holistic campus health monitoring, mitigation and management, including our continued pandemic response needs. With the fundamental goal of supporting our academic mission, this committee will be responsible for recommending and implementing public health strategies to address immediate needs, as well as providing long-term strategies for supporting campus health at Wake Forest. This website will provide updates from the committee’s work, as well as direction to relevant health information on the websites of appropriate campus departments.

Description: Winston Salem Journal series regarding the state's prosection of the innocent Darryl Hunt In a six-month investigation, The Journal has found that the police used questionable tactics and relied on even more questionable witnesses to bore in on Hunt as a suspect. It shows how legal decisions kept piling up against Hunt, sometimes because defense tactics failed. And it reveals how the state changed its theory of the crime to fit the new DNA evidence rather than re-investigate the case. Written by WFU journalism professor Phoebe Zerwick

Description: The Department of Sociology at Wake Forest University is a thriving community of teacher-scholars and students devoted to the scientific study of society. Sociology has a rich history and provides a unique and powerful perspective for understanding the social basis of all human activity. The basic idea behind this perspective is that the larger social context in which we live influences our social institutions, the social groups of which we are apart, our educational and occupational opportunities as well as our most private and personal experiences. Studying sociology is not only a critical part of a liberal arts education but prepares students for careers in law, medicine, education, public health, social work, business, criminal justice, not-for-profit organizations, and many other fields. We have 12 full-time faculty members who conduct research and teach courses on a range of compelling topics, including the sociology of culture, family, law, religion, education, work, race and ethnicity, gender, business, criminal justice, politics, immigration, sport, emotion, and health. Our courses offer students the opportunity to examine the often complex causes and consequences of socioeconomic status, gender, race, and sexual orientation inequality. Students can earn certification for concentrations in crime and criminal justice, business and society, and the social determinants of health and well-being.
