Description:

After more than twenty years of uninterrupted growth, Ghent University in Belgium is now one of the most important institutions of higher education and research in the Low Countries. Ghent University yearly attracts over 28,000 students, with a foreign student population of over 2,200 EU and non-EU citizens and offers a broad range of study programmes in all academic and scientific branches. One of the focus points of the university library is long-term digital preservation. One aspect of that task is to preserve the content of various university websites at different points in time.

Collection: Universiteitsbibliotheek

Description: The University library's mission is fourfold. She directs the library network of the university, under supervision of the interfaculty library commission, as a digital library she provides access to electronic journals and databases, she takes care of the cultural heritage and the passive collection of the library, and she provides students with a study area in the marvellous Van de Velde building. In this era of globalisation, almost every scientific library in the world owns the same package of scientific information. The collection of the University of Ghent, however, provides a substantial added value. To put this unknown treasure of cultural heritage in the spotlight it deserves, to present this collection as a research object to the scientific community, and, most of all, to gain digital expertise, we want to focus the next five years on one particular field, namely Architecture and Urban Planning, in co-operation with the departments of Architecture and Urban Planning, and Art, Music and Theatre Sciences.. Goal of this project, is to create a catalogue of architecture, as well of the book tower collection as of the departments collections, enriched with user-friendly keywords to provide free access to parts of our own collection and our own production in open archives, to pay extra attention to the physical preservation of books in this discipline and to work with other outstanding libraries in the creation of a virtual digital object repository. From time to time small conferences and exhibitions will be held to support the project and after five years ... we turn to another discipline.
