Description: El Tecolote began as a project in a La Raza Studies class at San Francisco State University on August 24, 1970. Professor Juan Gonzales created the class as a way to channel more Latinos into journalism. At that time Latinos and other people of color were virtually invisible in the major newsrooms. From the beginning, El Tecolote has been a community effort, powered by donations and a staff of dedicated volunteers. Today it’s a biweekly publication with a circulation of 10,000, and is the longest running Spanish/English bilingual newspaper in California.

Description: The San Francisco Bay Times in 1978 became the first LGBT newspaper in California, and among the first in the world, to be jointly and equally produced by lesbians and gay men. We honor our history and the paper’s ability to build and strengthen unity in our community. The SF Bay Times is the only LGBT newspaper in San Francisco, since its origin and until the present day, to have always been 100% LGBT funded and owned. The Bay Times has never been owned, in whole or in part, by anyone who is not LGBT identified.

Description: The Bay Area Reporter is America's longest continuously-published and highest circulation LGBTQ newspaper. The BAR strives to prioritize coverage of stories that mainstream media may overlook: anti-gay discrimination in employment and housing; bias and fear of people with HIV/AIDS; victims of abuse and anti-gay violence; the plight of at-risk youth; and the unmet needs of LGBT elders. Our articles have given voice to the vulnerable and are a record of our history.
