Title: The MoistureMap Project

URL: http://moisturemap.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Units, Networks & Other 2

Description: Accurate knowledge of current and future spatial variation in surface and root zone soil moisture at high resolution is critical for achieving sustainable land and water management. The fundamental limitation is that spatial and temporal variation in soil moisture is not well known, nor easy to measure or predict. Consequently, a prototype soil moisture monitoring, prediction and reporting system is being developed for Australia, with the Murrumbidgee as the demonstration catchment. The system will provide current and future soil moisture information and its uncertainty at 1km resolution, by combining weather, climate and land surface model predictions with soil moisture data from the European Space Agency's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) satellite scheduled for launch in the second half of 2009; the first-ever dedicated microwave soil moisture mission. A significant component of this project is developing and testing the soil moisture retrieval algorithms to be used by SMOS and verifying the SMOS data for Australian conditions.

Title: Medical History Museum - Melbourne Medical School

URL: http://museum.medicine.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Collection Management (University)

Description: The Medical History Museum and its collection were formally established in 1967 in conjunction with the Department of Medical History, under the professorship of Kenneth Russell. The museum itself was opened with generous funding from the Wellcome Institute (now Wellcome Trust), London, in support of study and research in medical history. The collection at this time consisted of a small but well-selected range of medical artefacts that Professor Russell had gradually acquired over time, with a view to opening a museum. This was in keeping with the long-standing tradition of leading medical schools across the world to develop their historical resources as a study collection. Since its opening in 1967, the museum's collection has grown substantially through the donation of documents, photographs, instruments, and records from medical graduates, families and institutions in and around Melbourne. Originally the collection mainly reflected the teaching of medicine at the University of Melbourne and its clinical schools, and the achievements of its graduates from the 1860s to the present day. However, the donation in 1971 of the nineteenth-century Savory and Moore Pharmacy, through a further grant from the Wellcome Trust, and the 1994 acquisition of the Australian Medical Association collection, has seen the scope of the museum broadened to reflect the history of medical practice in Victoria, and more generally the development of Western medicine. The Medical History Museum (MHM) in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Melbourne is the oldest and finest collection of its type associated with a Medical School in Australia. Established in 1967, by Kenneth Russell, a professor in anatomy, with support from the Wellcome Institute, London, the Medical History Museum, the museum covers the history of the Melbourne Medical School and the broader history of medicine in Australia and overseas The purpose of the museum is to encourage appreciation and understanding of the history of medicine and its role in society. The museum stimulates active learning about the history of medicine through research, teaching, and dialogue among communities of students, faculty, scholars, alumni, and the wider public. MHM has an annual program of Exhibitions. It is open to members of the public and functions as a tool for the University’s teaching and research. Tours are available by appointment.

URL: http://scientificinquiry.meu.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Units, Networks & Other 4

Description: One of the challenges facing higher education in Australia is identifying the best way towards developing skilled bioscience graduates for a competitive workforce. International commentators claim that widespread adoption of teaching innovation during the early years of bioscience degrees will have a major impact1-4. However, the extent to which bioscience educators in Australia explicitly teach scientific inquiry skills to their students, and the pedagogies they use to achieve this is presently unknown. The project sought to clarify this situation and has: Consulted 42 educators across eleven bioscience disciplines and from a broad range of Australian universities Identified cases where educators considered they were intentionally teaching scientific inquiry Investigated the role of educational technologies in supporting the development of scientific inquiry skills Identified strategies used by educators to evaluate learning Determined educators’ perceptions of the nature of scientific inquiry, and compared them to reported views of contemporary scientists The key findings of the project have been published in a handbook Teaching scientific inquiry skills: A handbook for bioscience educators in Australian universities. The handbook provides: A snapshot of current practice to teach scientific inquiry Descriptions of 26 cases where scientific inquiry skills are explicitly taught Detailed learning designs of six cases of innovative practice Resources to assist educators to evaluate the effectiveness of teaching practice.
