Description: SPIRE 2008 is the 15th Annual Edition of the Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval. SPIRE has its origins in the South American Workshop on String Processing which was first held in Belo Horizonte (Brazil, 1993). Starting in 1998, the focus of the workshop was broadened to include information retrieval due to its increasing relevance and its inter-relationship with the area of string processing. In addition, since 2000, the conference venue has been in Europe in even years. The last conferences have been in Padova (Italy), Buenos Aires (Argentina), Glasgow (UK), and Santiago (Chile). This year, the conference has been expanded to include the Asia-Pacific region. As in past editions, the proceedings of SPIRE 2008 was published by Springer in Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS), Volume 5280 by Springer.

Through its teaching, research, public policy and outreach programs, it is building Australia’s capacity to understand India. Based at the University of Melbourne, the Institute hosts a growing range of programs that are deepening and enriching the relationship between the two countries. The University of Melbourne established the Australia India Institute in October 2008. Description: Australia India Strategic Research Fund (AISRF) funded by both Australian and Indian Governments is dedicated to promote bilateral research between Australian and Indian researchers to participate in leading edge scientific research projects and workshops. This workshop funded by AISRF focusses on improving disaster management practices in Indian and Australia. The magnitude and impacts of disasters caused by both natural and unnatural disasters have been huge for governments and societies especially in the last three decades. Statistics show that the Australia’s financial losses after a major disaster is similar to that of India, whilst India’s societal losses have been higher. Both India and Australia aim towards a disaster resilient society based on a whole-of-nation approach underpinned by the application of emerging technologies. In this context, spatial information has been embraced by governments at certain levels with limited success. However the application of spatially enabled technologies should not be just limited individual applications. An integrative platform that can span across all levels of government, societies and organisations with both control and input across a range of data would be an ideal platform for enhanced planning, preparation, response and recovery. This workshop will analyse current practice and outline best practice measures for both governments. A review of national technological capacity will be undertaken based on the state-of-the-art research in natural and unnatural disasters. Participants from Australia and India include internationally acclaimed academics and practitioners. Public participation is allowed for selected sessions. This workshop commences on the 21st Jan 2013 and concludes on the 24th Jan 2013 and is held in the Industrial Consulting and Sponsored Research (IC & SR) Building in the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IITM), Sardar Patel Road, Chennai due to the collaborative efforts of University of Madras and IITM, Chennai. Furthermore the workshop is represented by delegates from the Department of Science and Technology, National Institute of Karnataka, National Maritime Foundation, Government of Tamilnadu, Government of Gujarat, Anna University, Coordinates Magazine and SEEDS India. Australian representations include academics from The University of Melbourne, The Swinburne University of Technology, Victoria University, Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and Victoria State Police in Melbourne. A short field visit to the coastal hamlets in and around Nemmeli on the East Coast Road is planned to witness the role of higher education in re-building disaster prone coastal communities http://uccnemmeli.unom.ac.in and also to plan for multi-institutional collaborative field demonstration projects in this location.

Description: The Australian Venom Research Unit (AVRU) is an internationally recognised interdisciplinary research unit focused on the problem of venomous injury in Australia and the Asia-Pacific. The AVRU was established by Associate Professor Struan Sutherland, formerly of CSL, on the 1st of July 1994 in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Melbourne. This followed an announcement by CSL Ltd (the former Commonwealth Serum Laboratories) that after a 65 year period, its interest in venom and antivenom research was to cease. The announcement was made immediately prior to the launch of CSL Ltd on the Australian Stock Exchange in May 1994. As such the Unit builds on 70 years of expertise concerning venom and antivenom research and advocacy at CSL. CSL assisted in the establishment of the Unit and initial annual funding came from the Victorian Department of Human Services. Since 2002 the Unit has been mostly funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Health and Ageing as well as the Australia Research Council. The Australian Venom Research Unit aims to provide world-class expertise on the problem of Australia's venomous creatures, their toxins and the care of the envenomed patient.

The Centre also provides an opportunity for liaison between the Indigenous community and the University and is an important information service for those interested in Indigenous history and culture.

Description: Hebrew and Jewish studies have been part of the fabric of teaching at the University of Melbourne since 1946. It began with the endowment of the Lazarus and Abraham Sicree Chair of Semitic Studies and the appointment of the foundation professor, Maurice Goldman. Since then, Hebrew and Jewish studies have earned both national visibility and international recognition, and have acquired a place of honour for scholarly excellence, educational initiatives and cultural outreach. Over the last 60 years, the level and range of courses in Hebrew and Jewish studies at the University of Melbourne has grown and continues to expand to this day. We strive to make available to scholars, students and the public the riches and beauty of the Hebrew language and the Jewish tradition, in all its phases. To that end, we offer Hebrew language courses at four levels, from beginners to advanced. Our teaching program is varied and broad. At an undergraduate level, we offer students an opportunity to explore aspects of the Hebrew language and literature, Jewish history, film, culture, religion, literature, thought, society and politics. At the postgraduate level, the Centre enables students to undertake Honours, Masters and PhD studies.

Description: The CMCL is a centre for the research, discussion and teaching of all aspects of media and communications law and policy. The CMCL: undertakes large scale research projects; holds public seminars about legal and regulatory developments; supports research visits from Australian and international academics, lawyers and policy makers; and supervises undergraduate and graduate teaching and research in media and communications law. The CMCL has a team of Directors from the Melbourne Law School, as well as Associates from across the University of Melbourne, and Research Staff. It is assisted by an Advisory Board representing a wide variety of expertise in media and communications industries and legal practices, and receives support from the Melbourne Law School as well as external sponsors and research partners. It is the editorial base for the Media & Arts Law Review, a leading refereed journal in the field. Content from 2006 onward is available internationally in digital full text, from its publisher LexisNexis, as well as in paper form. Earlier content is available in the 'Issue Contents' section on the Media & Arts Law Review page of this website . A number of other CMCL publications are available online or from the CMCL. The CMCL updated its name to Media and Communications Law Research Network (MCLRN)
