Title: Grainger Museum

URL: https://grainger.unimelb.edu.au/

Collection: Collection Management (University)

Description: Grainger's thoughts of establishing an autobiographical museum began in the early 1920s, initially in response to the sudden death of his mother Rose. In a letter to his friend Balfour Gardiner, dated 3 May 1922, Grainger mentioned the idea for the first time: 'All very intimate letters or notes should be deposited in an Australian Grainger Museum, preferably in birth-town Melbourne'. The project developed for some years in Grainger's mind. In the 1955 Museum Legend Aims of the Grainger Museum , Grainger set forth his intentions. Basically, he wanted to stress the creative side of music (composition), rather than the interpretive side (performance). Originally called the 'Music Museum and Grainger Museum', and later the 'Grainger Museum', the building was constructed in two stages between 1935 and 1939, facing Royal Parade on the University of Melbourne campus in Parkville. It was officially opened in December 1938. The Grainger Museum is the only purpose-built autobiographical museum in Australia. The building is in a simple Moderne style with some Arts and Crafts characteristics. It was designed by the University's architect, John Gawler of the firm Gawler and Drummond, in close consultation with Grainger, who funded the construction, staffing and upkeep during his lifetime. The Museum contains not only a large quantity of material from his own life, but much material concerning his musical contemporaries, particularly the lesser-known ones, such as his Frankfurt Group of composers. After many initial hindrances, such as the use of the building for storage and other purposes during and after the Second World War, most of the exhibits (including complex display legends) were finally established during Grainger's last visit to Australia in the mid 1950s, although he never completed the project to the extent that he had hoped. During the 1960s the museum was opened to the public on a regular basis for the first time and in 1966 briefly became the setting for concerts and workshops for jazz and avant-garde music. The following 20 years were a period of consolidation. An extensive programme of cataloguing the Museum's holdings - begun in the mid-1970s by the then curator, Dr Kay Dreyfus - resulted in the publication of several important volumes, including three music catalogues and the seminal book The farthest north of humanness: Letters of Percy Grainger 1901-14. As well as the permanent displays, temporary exhibitions highlighting different aspects of the collection were presented and concerts and cultural events were held. Almost since its opening in the 1930s the Museum suffered from problems caused by the building's location and design. In 2003 the building was closed to the public and the collection relocated to offsite storage. This enabled a major problem of building conservation works to be undertaken under the supervision of heritage architects Lovell Chen Pty Ltd, resulting in improved facilities for the collection, visitors and staff. These works have been funded by the University of Melbourne, the University Library and several generous gifts and bequests. The Museum building reopened to the public on Sunday 17 October 2010 with a new suite of exhibitions, curated by Grainger Museum staff and designed by Lucy Bannyan of Bannyan Wood Pty Ltd. The Grainger Museum is now part of the University of Melbourne Library.

Description: The Melbourne School of Government aims to improve the capacity of decision-makers to build shared futures in the face of hard global challenges and public governance dilemmas.
This means: providing politicians, public servants and citizens with sound evidence to help them consider the long-term consequences of the choices they make supporting the development of robust public institutions that are able to deliver programmes and services but also able defend the public interest, and contributing to a culture of public discussion and debate to ensure that new ideas and policy options are fully examined.

Achieving these ambitions in a world where the challenges are complex and interconnected requires access to multi-disciplinary expertise and know-how that can offer insights into the scientific, technical, ethical and social dimensions of public problems and governance dilemmas. The Melbourne School of Government aims to do this by bringing together University experts with politicians, industry leaders and civil society organisations and creating a fertile environment where ideas, disciplinary expertise and leadership combine to generate wise and actionable solutions.

Working with colleagues from a range of disciplines including economics, development studies, international relations, law, politics and management, the new School will inspire and nurture a future generation of leaders devoted to public service and committed to improving our world. Our curriculum will be attentive to the hard global challenges and public governance dilemmas we face, will be informed by important geo-political trends such as the rise of Asia, and will equip our graduates with the necessary tools and skills to turn ideas into practical action.

Description: WELCOME TO DSSRN The Data, Systems and Society Research Network (DSSRN) is a collaborative research network focused on building a community of research scholars, and data infrastructure, to support internal collaborations and external partnerships, as well as sharing knowledge, tools and resources in the broad area of data, systems, and society. The Network provides leadership across the University of Melbourne to facilitate the development of research initiatives, support collaborative research, and assist in forming research clusters in conjunction with suitable partners by planning and delivering targeted research events. Problem Statement With the increasing sophistication and ubiquity of data garnering technologies, the quantity, resolution, and scope of data that we can collect is growing at an incredible rate. This has led to the popularisation of the notion of "big data" analytics. Beyond the celebratory rhetoric which sees governments, industry and the academy invest in building enhanced data capacity, the true potential of having more data is highly dependent on format and context, behind which are hidden many domain-specific subtleties, constraints, risks and blind-spots. Many fields that have typically been seen as "data-poor" are now becoming "data-rich", and face the prospect of being able to explore many new questions. With greater quantities, and new types of data available, there are new opportunities to borrow from methods and tools that have been developed in traditionally data-rich disciplines. However cross-disciplinary knowledge transfer is critical to building meaningful and appropriate capacities around data. Methods cannot be borrowed from other domains and applied indiscriminately to any dataset; just because something can be computed does not mean that the result has meaning. Locked away in many disciplines is a wealth of knowledge, much of it implicit, which must be understood in order to conduct valid research. Big data doesn’t always translate to better or more objective results. Accordingly, we need to move beyond the celebratory moment of "big data" and deal with issues of definitional ambiguity, methodological constraints, ethics, governance, sustainability and other domain-specific complexities that do not preclude fruitful cross-disciplinary collaborations, but which require nuanced understanding and consideration from all sides. Our Mission We need to bring experts from difference disciplines and domains together to identify and understand these issues, so that we can identify real opportunities for cross-disciplinary research. Our mission is to help these people to find each other, to critically evaluate the applicability of available tools, methods, and datasets, and to help them foster new and exciting collaborations to address (and define) the real problems of working with unprecedented data.

The AVRU was established by Associate Professor Struan Sutherland, formerly of CSL, on the 1st of July 1994 in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of Melbourne. This followed an announcement by CSL Ltd (the former Commonwealth Serum Laboratories) that after a 65 year period, its interest in venom and antivenom research was to cease. The announcement was made immediately prior to the launch of CSL Ltd on the Australian Stock Exchange in May 1994. As such the Unit builds on 70 years of expertise concerning venom and antivenom research and advocacy at CSL. CSL assisted in the establishment of the Unit and initial annual funding came from the Victorian Department of Human Services. Since 2002 the Unit has been mostly funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Health and Ageing as well as the Australia Research Council.
