UNM Health Allies for Climate Action

Archived since: Mar, 2022

Description:

UNM Health Allies for Climate Action is a newly formed student and faculty group seeking to bring attention to climate change and its impact on our communities. We believe that climate, health, and equity is the foundation for building a socially just future for all. Climate issues are ever-present in every socioecological layer of our lives: from the food waste and material waste produced in our cafeterias, to the waste produced by plastics in hospitals, all the way to oil extraction and the impact that fracking has on our local Native American populations. Raising awareness of the many ways climate injustice presents health risks on our lives and our community is one step towards inspiring action to bring about health equity for the communities our student body will engage with beyond campus. Our goal is to create a buzz around climate change on our campus to bring it to the forefront of our conversations as future health professionals. This photo project is sponsored by the 2020 APHA Student Champions for Climate Justice Award which was awarded to five student groups across the country. Created by APHA’s Center for Climate, Health and Equity, this award aims to support student work that raises awareness about the effects of climate change on health equity through campus and community engagement. The photovoice project will serve as a visual dialogue about how students and our greater UNM and Albuquerque community perceive climate justice and injustice at the intersection of public health. Photos submitted to this project will be displayed in a future installation at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Library. A reception to celebrate the compilation of these photos will be announced at a later date.
