Description: This article includes a statement from the Congress of Indigenous Peoples of Colombia that met in Bogota, Colombia between October 8-12, 2010. In the statement, the Congress of Indigenous Peoples calls for popular empowerment, the creation of a People's Constitution, and the establishment of a People's Legislative Agenda. As part of this statement, the Congress condemns the activities of transnational mining and energy companies in indigenous territories and the failure of the Colombian government to protect local communities and ensure community consultation concerning these mining and energy projects.
