Description: This report examines the Pasto-Macoa Highway Project, an infrastructure project of the Initiative for the Integration of the Regional Infrastructure of South America (IIRSA). The project proposes to construct a highway from Pasto to Macoa within Colombia as part of the eventual construction of a transcontinental highway, from Tumaco, Colombia to Belem, Brazil, thereby providing a road linking the Pacific to the Atlantic. Description: This article discusses a new campaign that has been organized in defense of indigenous groups living in voluntary isolation ("uncontacted") in the South American Amazon. In January 2011, an Open Letter was sent to the governments of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela by Brazilian anthropologist Sydney Possuelo with the support of the Bolivia-based Forum on Environment and Development (FOBOMADE) and the Madidi Expedition, along with the signatures of 900 individuals. The letter was asking governments of the region to establish measures to protect the biological integrity and economic, social and cultural rights of these populations who are facing increasing pressure from oil, mining, hydroelectric, and other energy-related interests.
