Description:
The Phoenix Media/Communications Group published weekly alternative newspapers in the Boston, MA area beginning in 1966 (The Phoenix, Boston Phoenix, Boston After Dark), in Providence, RI beginning in 1988 (Providence Phoenix), and in Portland, ME beginning in 1999 (Portland Phoenix). The Boston Phoenix was known for its music and entertainment coverage, which garnered classical music writer Lloyd Schwartz a Pulitzer Prize for criticism in 1994. The Phoenix Media/Communications Group also owned the alternative rock radio station WFNX, which was sold to Clear Channel in 2012. The Boston Phoenix published its final issue on March 15, 2013, and the final Providence Phoenix was published October 17, 2014.

Special Collections preserves the history of Boston's social movements, including civil and political rights, immigrant rights, homelessness, and urban and environmental justice. The records document the history of Boston's African American, Chinese, LGBTQ, Latino and other communities, as well as Boston's public infrastructure, neighborhoods, and natural environments. Special Collections also includes rare books, faculty publications, and the Northeastern University Press collection. Most of these publications are searchable in Scholar OneSearch.

The Northeastern University Archives include the historical records and publications of Northeastern University - its colleges, centers, and administrative units. Among these materials are master theses and doctoral dissertations, as well as other Northeastern University Publications, including Northeastern University course catalogs, newspapers, photographs, and yearbooks. The Archives also preserves historical records of administrative and academic units, and selected individuals and outside organizations with ties to the University.
