Collection: Special Collections in Performing Arts

Description: Archived website of the International Society for Music Education (ISME). ISME was established by the International Music Council of the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 1953. The original goal for ISME was to encourage music education as an integral part of general education and community life throughout the world, and as a profession within the broad field of music. The first conference was held in Lindau, Germany and Zurich, Switzerland in 1955 to transact the business of the organization and to share findings based upon research and experience in music education. Subsequent conferences were held in 1958, 1961, 1963, and biennially since 1964. Ideas are shared through workshops, demonstrations, lectures, concerts, exhibitions and social events. ISME has been represented in over 80 countries throughout the world by National Sections/Organizations which assist in transacting financial business and in sponsoring music education activities. In 1976, ISME Regional Centers began to be established to assist with these functions. The PGCCPTA was organized in May 1941, by the memberships of five local Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs): Greenbelt Elementary, Greenbelt High, Mt. Rainier High, Oxon Hill Elementary, and Riverdale Elementary schools. The mission of the PGCCPTA was to strengthen and improve local PTAs ("units") and their programs; compile, evaluate, and report information about children and their needs; provide workshops and training sessions for their members; and provide a means for local PTAs to coordinate their efforts. The PGCCPTA was an unincorporated organization which, along with the individual PTAs, was chartered under the Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers (MCPT), a state branch of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers (NCPT). The MCPT approved the bylaws of the PGCCPTA as well as the local units and examined the PGCCPTA's records and accounts for accuracy. In 2000, the MCPT revoked the charter of the PGCCPTA for undisclosed reasons. The charter was reinstated the following year, but was once again revoked in 2007 for failure to keep accurate records of bylaws, minutes, and financial documents. The PGCCPTA was re-established in 2010. URL: http://www.studiotheatre.org/

Collection: Special Collections in Performing Arts

Description: Archived website of Studio Theatre, which began in 1978 as a collaboration between Artistic Director Joy Zinoman and Designer Russell Metheny with support of arts advocate Virginia Crawford. Prior to the beginning of TST, Metheny and Zinoman had worked together on successful productions for Washingtons West End Theatre. The Studio Theatre strives to produce plays that focus on interaction between actor and audience and thus has used intimate performance spaces since its founding. In the late 1980s two more production divisions were introduced: The Studio 2ndStage and Special Events. As additions to The Studio Theatres subscription season, Special Events showcases works by performing artists without other performance opportunities in D.C. while The Studio 2ndStage produces plays which often push the boundaries of more conservative theater. In 1992, the Studio launched its Campaign to Secure the Future, an ambitious 3.5 million dollar undertaking to expand the physical space of the theatre and contribute to the revitalization of the 14th Street corridor. This successful project added two stages, numerous classrooms, and confirmed the ongoing expansion of the Studio Theatres impact. Further renovations were completed between 2002 and 2006 to update the building and improve accessibility and technological aspects of the building. Today, the Studio Theatre maintains an active relationship with the 14th street community and offers many free and affordable options for low income residents as well as partnerships with various community and youth organizations. The Studio Theatre website includes information about its season, tickets, location, educational programs, mission, history, production history, awards, and staff.

Title: Viola da Gamba Society of America

URL: http://www.vdgsa.org/

Collection: Special Collections in Performing Arts

Description: Archived website of the Viola da Gamba Society of America. Founded by George Glenn and incorporated in 1962, the Viola da Gamba Society of America (VdGSA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the support of activities relating to the viola da gamba in the United States and abroad. The society is comprised of players, builders, publishers, distributors, restorers and others sharing an interest in music for viols and various other early bowed string instruments. Annually, a week-long conclave is held during mid-summer at an educational institution in the U.S. with a faculty of internationally recognized performers and scholars. The VdGSA was formed by a small nucleus of enthusiastic viol players who frequently met to play consort music in rural Maryland. The concept of an annual Conclave was born at that time, with a small enough membership to be accommodated in private homes. As numbers of members increased, Conclaves eventually began taking place in educational institutions throughout the country. It is the policy of the VdGSA to convene the Conclave in different locations as an outreach to the dispersed membership. Organizational membership totals about 1100 individuals and institutions worldwide. Aside from the national organization, there are 13 official chapters and 35 area representatives in the United States, 4 area representatives from Canada, and another 5 around the world. The VdGSA website includes information about its membership, chapters, StoryChord project, grants, programs, annual Conclave, music catalog, teaching and events video, publications, research, events, and classified ads.
