Title: Maryland State Grange

URL: https://www.facebook.com/MarylandStateGrange/

Collection: Special Collections

Description: Archived Facebook profile of the Maryland State Grange. Oliver Hudson Kelley organized the first grange in Washington in 1868. The Colora Grange in Cecil County was Maryland's first, established in 1873. The grange movement grew quickly, and by 1874, 110 Granges existed all over Maryland. The organization rapidly evolved from an agricultural fraternity to a largely commercial venture. When business failure hit in 1875, membership dropped and many Granges were disbanded. Since that heyday, the Grange has remained active not only in agriculture and things affecting agriculture, but also as a special action group, taking a stand on such issues as war and peace, relief, and education. By 1960, 45 Granges were active in the state of Maryland. Preserved by the University of Maryland Libraries Web Resources Collection Program: Special Collections. Title: Shirley Povich Tribute

URL: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/sports/longterm/general/povich/povich.htm

Collection: Special Collections

Description: Archived Washington Post online tribute to long time sports writer Shirley Povich, containing a selection of his columns. Shirley Povich (1905-1998) was a newspaper sports editor and columnist for The Washington Post. He worked there for 41 years, before his retirement in 1973. Povich was only 21 when he became the youngest sports editor in the country and he subsequently began his own sports column, "This Morning with Shirley Povich." The column was briefly halted while he reported in the Pacific Theater during World War II, from 1944 to 1945. Povich reported on many important events, including his columns from the 1972 Munich Olympics and hostage crisis. He was present at the 1932 World Series and Babe Ruth's "called shot." Povich was extremely interested in the Washington, D.C. sports teams, including the Nationals and the Redskins. He had a tumultous relationship with the Redskins owner George Preston Marshall, often calling him out in his columns for his lack of racial integration on the field. In the span of his career, Povich wrote over 15,000 columns. He officially retired in 1973, but still wrote more than 500 pieces after his "retirement". In 1995, Povich was honored by The Post publisher, Donald Graham, for his 75th anniversary at the newspaper. Title: Washington Area Performing Arts Video Archive (WAPAVA)

URL: http://www.wapava.org/

Collection: Special Collections In the Performing Arts

Description: Archived website of the Washington Area Performing Arts Video Archive (WAPAVA), 2014 to present. WAPAVA was established in 1991 by James J. Taylor with the goal of creating and preserving a videotape collection of stage performances in the Washington D.C. area. Taylor worked previously as a city planner in St. Louis, Missouri, and Cleveland, Ohio from the 1960s to 1970s. In 1977 he left his career to become a stage manager at Stage 70, which later became the Round House Theatre, in Montgomery County, Maryland. Taylor learned videography while directing programs at a public-access cable channel, and later secured permission from the Actors Equity Association in New York City to tape stage performances in Washington. His recordings of area theatre and dance performances from 1993 formed the bases and the bulk of the WAPAVA, which was originally stored in the Washington, D.C. Public Library system. In December of 2004, the archive was donated to the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library. Just prior to Taylors death on March 28, 2005, the archive was renamed the James J. Taylor Washington Area Performing Arts Video Archive in his honor. WAPAVA is one of only two active Actors Equity-approved video performance archives in the United States. Since 1993, over 700 professional productions representing a cross-section of Washington-area theatres from large to small have been recorded. Performances are selected for consideration by an Advisory Board consisting of theatre professionals, critics, academics, and theatre lovers. Criteria for selection include historical and educational value, and special consideration is given to premieres, unique events, community interest, and contributions of particular value by performers, directors, and designers. Title: Viola da Gamba Society of America

URL: http://www.vdgsa.org/

Collection: Special Collections In the Performing Arts

Description: Archived website of the Viola da Gamba Society of America, 2013-2014. Founded by George Glenn and incorporated in 1962, the Viola da Gamba Society of America (VdGSA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the support of activities relating to the viola da gamba in the United States and abroad. The society is comprised of players, builders, publishers, distributors, restorers and others sharing an interest in music for viols and various other early bowed string instruments. Annually, a week-long conclave is held during mid-summer at an educational institution in the U.S. with a faculty of internationally recognized performers and scholars. The VdGSA was formed by a small nucleus of enthusiastic viol players who frequently met to play consort music in rural Maryland. The concept of an annual Conclave was born at that time, with a small enough membership to be accommodated in private homes. As numbers of members increased, Conclaves eventually began taking place in educational institutions throughout the country. It is the policy of the VdGSA to convene the Conclave in different locations as an outreach to the dispersed membership. Organizational membership totals about 1100 individuals and institutions worldwide. Aside from the national organization, there are 13 official chapters and 35 area representatives in the United States, 4 area representatives from Canada, and another 5 around the world. Title: Studio Theatre

URL: http://www.studiotheatre.org/

Collection: Special Collections In the Performing Arts

Description: Archived website of Studio Theatre, 2013-2014. The Studio Theatre began in 1978 as a collaboration between Artistic Director Joy Zinoman and Designer Russell Metheny with support of arts advocate Virginia Crawford. Prior to the beginning of TST, Metheny and Zinoman had worked together on successful productions for Washingtons West End Theatre. The Studio Theatre strives to produce plays that focus on interaction between actor and audience and thus has used intimate performance spaces since its founding. In the late 1980s two more production divisions were introduced: The Studio 2ndStage and Special Events. As additions to The Studio Theatres subscription season, Special Events showcases works by performing artists without other performance opportunities in D.C. while The Studio 2ndStage produces plays which often push the boundaries of more conservative theater. In 1992, the Studio launched its Campaign to Secure the Future, an ambitious 3.5 million dollar undertaking to expand the physical space of the theatre and contribute to the revitalization of the 14th Street corridor. This successful project added two stages, numerous classrooms, and confirmed the ongoing expansion of the Studio Theatres impact. Further renovations were completed between 2002 and 2006 to update the building and improve accessibility and technological aspects of the building. Today, the Studio Theatre maintains an active relationship with the 14th street community and offers many free and affordable options for low income residents as well as partnerships with various community and youth organizations.
