Title: Maryland National Organization for Women

URL: http://marylandnow.org/

Collection: Special Collections

Description: Archived website of the Maryland National Organization for Women. The National Organization for Women (NOW) was founded in 1966 to advocate for women's economic, political, and social equality through education, fundraising, lawsuits, legislative lobbying, protests, and rallies. The state organization coordinated activities in support of national actions such as campaigning for the ERA as well as supporting involvement in state and local politics. Beginning in the late 1970s, the state council raised funds to pay for a NOW lobbyist in Annapolis, charged with keeping NOW's concerns for women's economic and political rights and, particularly, access to reproductive health care and birth control before the legislature and with keeping NOW members informed about current bills that affected women's issues. The Maryland NOW website includes information about its mission, bylaws, chapters, officers, political action committee (PAC), issues, campaigns, opportunities for participation, resources, and events. The site also hosts a news and opinion blog.

Title: Pacifica Network

URL: http://pacificanetwork.org/

Collection: Special Collections

Description: Archived website of the Pacifica Network, an affiliated network of listener sponsored radio stations. Founded in 1946 by Lewis Hill, Eleanor McKinney and others as a noncommercial, educational, cultural radio in the San Francisco Bay area, the Pacifica Network has continued to flourish as a completely listener-supported radio network. The goal behind having listener support was to insure a grass-roots forum that would support diversity, freedom of speech, and promote programs according to what the listeners want, not what a corporate sponsor wants. Hill's strong beliefs in open communication and freedom of expression helped Pacifica set precedents concerning freedom of speech in broadcasting. Besides the pioneer station, KPFA (Berkeley), Pacifica Radio consists of KPFK (Los Angeles), WBAI (New York), KPFT (Houston), and WPFW (Washington, DC). The Pacifica Network website includes information about its history, governance, affiliate stations, programs, resources, and news stories.

The tribute includes a selection of Povich's columns on baseball, boxing, football, and current events. It also includes Povich's obituary, biography, interviews with Povich, readers' e-mail condolence messages, and personal recollections by Post writers Tony Kornheiser, Michael Wilbon, and Thomas Boswell Povich, who retired in 1973, was only 21 when he became the youngest sports editor in the country. He subsequently began his own sports column, "This Morning with Shirley Povich." The column was briefly halted while he reported in the Pacific Theater during World War II, from 1944 to 1945. Povich's columns mark many important events, including the 1972 Munich Olympics and hostage crisis, and the 1932 World Series and Babe Ruth's "called shot." Povich was extremely interested in the Washington, D.C. sports teams, including the Nationals and the Redskins, and had a tumultous relationship with the Redskins owner George Preston Marshall, often calling him out in his columns for his lack of racial integration on the field. In the span of his career, Povich wrote over 15,000 columns. He officially retired in 1973, but still wrote more than 500 pieces after his "retirement". In 1995, Povich was honored by The Post publisher, Donald Graham, for his 75th anniversary at the newspaper.
