Description: The American Shakespeare Center (The Blackfriars Playhouse, 10 S. Market Street, Staunton, VA 24401) was established in 1988 by Ralph Alan Cohen and Jim Warren as a traveling troupe named the Shenandoah Shakespeare Express, and renamed first Shenandoah Shakespeare in 1999 and later the American Shakespeare Center in 2005. Their playhouse, The Blackfriars, is a reconstruction of the original Blackfriars Theatre, and their productions attempt to recreate the 'original staging practices', most notably universal lighting and musical interludes.
