Title: Early Modern Digital Agendas

URL: http://emdigitalagendas.folger.edu/

Collection: Folger Shakespeare Library Websites and Social Media

Description: In July 2013, the Folger Institute will offer “Early Modern Digital Agendas” under the direction of Jonathan Hope, Professor of Literary Linguistics at the University of Strathclyde. It is an NEH-funded, three-week institute that will explore the robust set of digital tools with period-specific challenges and limitations that early modern literary scholars of English now have at hand. “Early Modern Digital Agendas” will create a forum in which twenty faculty, information staffers, and advanced graduate student participants can historicize, theorize, and critically evaluate current and future digital approaches to early modern literary studies—from Early English Books Online-Text Creation Partnership (EEBO-TCP) to advanced corpus linguistics, semantic searching, and visualization theory—with discussion growing out of, and feeding back into, their own projects (current and envisaged). With the guidance of expert visiting faculty, attention will be paid to the ways new technologies are shaping the very nature of early modern research and the means by which scholars interpret texts, teach their students, and present their findings to other scholars. This institute is supported by an Institutes for Advanced Topics in the Digital Humanities grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities’ Office of Digital Humanities. A three-minute, “lightning-talk” video introduction of the project was made at the ODH Project Directors meeting.

Title: Early Modern English Drama

URL: http://emed.folger.edu/

Collection: Folger Shakespeare Library Websites and Social Media

Description: A Digital Anthology of Early Modern English Drama opens a window on the vibrant theatrical community in which Shakespeare built his career. Unlike other Folger resources about Shakespeare and his plays, Early Modern English Drama (EMED) features the plays by other playwrights, illuminating an extraordinary era of artistic ferment. In addition to Shakespeare’s plays (which are available in Folger Digital Texts), hundreds of works were written and performed during London’s first period of commercial theater, from 1576 to 1642. A total of 403 of these plays by other writers still exist in early printed editions. EMED provides a wealth of data on each of them, which you can browse or search online or download in a variety of formats. EMED also includes full texts of a number of the plays in the original spelling as well as with some regularized forms. The textually encoded files are available, too. Whether you read the plays, discover new insights through data exploration, devise college and graduate curricula, or work toward scholarly editions, EMED widens our horizon to different plays and to new questions as we consider the drama of Shakespeare's time.

Collection: Folger Shakespeare Library Websites and Social Media

Description: Early Modern Manuscripts Online (EMMO) is a project of the Folger Shakespeare Library, funded by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), to provide scholars and the general public with convenient web access to transcriptions, images, and metadata for manuscripts from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. EMMO provides high-quality images and consistent transcriptions for a variety of manuscripts, such as letters, diaries, wills, coats of arms, literary pieces, recipe books, miscellanies, and more. Making the rich content of these manuscripts available online enhances research capabilities in many disciplines by adding important sources for scholars to examine and also promotes the learning of paleography (the study of pre-modern handwriting methods).

Title: The Shakespeare Quartos Archive

URL: http://quartos.org/

Collection: Folger Shakespeare Library Websites and Social Media

Description: Today, six institutions in the United Kingdom and United States stand out as the main repositories of the pre-1642 quartos: the Bodleian Library of the University of Oxford, the British Library, the University of Edinburgh Library, the Folger Shakespeare Library, the Huntington Library, and the National Library of Scotland. The Shakespeare Quartos Archive has been established as the result of joint support from the US National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), and the UK Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). The University of Oxford is acting as lead institution in the United Kingdom. The Folger Shakespeare Library and the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities are acting as partner lead institutions in the United States. The six institutional content providers are joined as well by the Shakespeare Institute of the University of Birmingham for user evaluation. Through this international collaboration, many of the earliest Shakespeare quartos are now freely available for in-depth study to students of Shakespeare across the globe. The Shakespeare Quartos Archive expands the British Library's "Shakespeare in Quarto" website into an online collection reproducing at least one copy of every edition of William Shakespeare’s plays printed in quarto before the theatres closed in 1642. Joined to this resource is a prototype of an interactive interface and toolset aimed at facilitating scholarly research, performance studies, and new pedagogical applications derived from detailed examination and comparison of the quartos. Tools and functions include the ability to: overlay text images, compare images side-by-side, search full-text, mark and tag text images with user annotations, create public or private sets of annotations, create exhibits or character cue line lists, and download and print text and images. The interface prototype is at present fully functional for one play, Hamlet. The prototype is best viewed using the Firefox web browser, version 3.0 or higher. Many features have been tested and will also run on Internet Explorer versions 6, 7, and 8. Digitized images of all thirty-two pre-1642 copies of Hamlet held by participating libraries have undergone full-text transcription and encoding by staff at the Oxford Digital Library. The prototype has been assessed using professionally facilitated experimentation coordinated by the British Library, evaluation by graduate students and faculty at the Shakespeare Institute of the University of Birmingham, and evaluation by readers, staff, and secondary school teachers at the Folger Shakespeare Library.

Description: The open peer review of Shakespeare Quarterly’s new experimental feature, “After SAA.” Papers grouped under “Shakespeare and Philosophy,” “Shakespeare and Language,” and “Shakespeare and Skepticism” were first presented at the 2012 meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America. They appear here because they offer particular opportunities for further discussion within, and across, the boundaries of their hosting seminars. A fourth group of papers, under “Non-Shakespearean Drama and Performance,” marks SQ’s initiative of encouraging more work on drama other than Shakespeare’s. This open peer review and our subsequent “After SAA” issue of Shakespeare Quarterly will provide a place to continue the critical discussion that is the hallmark of the SAA seminar system, and to make the results of those conversations, and the communities that have formed around them, more freely and permanently available.

Title: PEN / Faulkner Foundation | Home

URL: http://www.penfaulkner.org/

Collection: Folger Shakespeare Library Websites and Social Media

Description: The institutional website for the PEN / Faulkner Foundation. The PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction was founded in 1980 by National Book Award winner Mary Lee Settle. Her goal was to establish a national prize that would recognize literary fiction of excellence, an award juried by writers for writers, free of commercial concerns. The prize was named for William Faulkner, who used his Nobel Prize funds to establish an award for younger writers, and PEN, the international writers’ organization. The first Award was given in May 1981, at a ceremony held in the Rotunda at the University of Virginia. Today, the PEN/Faulkner Award is one of the top three national fiction awards, and the largest annual peer-juried prize in America. As Philip Roth noted when he received the 2007 Award, "PEN/Faulkner has consistently recognized works of quality." The Award frequently recognizes new and emerging writers. In 1983, Dr. O.B. Hardison Jr., then director of Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C., offered to house the administration of the PEN/Faulkner Award within the Folger. Shortly after the move to Washington, PEN/Faulkner organized itself as an independent charitable arts foundation and began hosting a series of public fiction readings at the Folger. In 1989 the foundation launched the Writers in Schools program. An essential cultural organization, PEN/Faulkner continues to provide arts enrichment to the Washington metropolitan area. Mary Lee Settle’s mission--to create a community of writers, honor excellence in American fiction, and encourage a love of reading--has found ever-expanding expression in the work and outreach of the PEN/Faulkner Foundation.

Title: Folger Shakespeare Library: Shakespeare in American Life

URL: http://www.shakespeareinamericanlife.org/

Collection: Folger Shakespeare Library Websites and Social Media

Description: This website was developed as both a lasting online resource and a companion project for Shakespeare in American Life, a radio documentary produced by Richard Paul and narrated by Sam Waterston, airing on Public Radio International (PRI) stations beginning in April 2007. The project also benefited greatly from the 2007 Folger Shakespeare in American Life exhibition and related catalog, curated and edited by Alden and Virginia Vaughan with the assistance of Rachel Doggett, the then-curator of books and exhibitions, Librarian Richard Kuhta, and Virginia Millington, exhibitions coordinator. The website was made possible through the generous support of the National Endowment for the Humanities: “great ideas brought to life”; the National Endowment for the Arts, which believes a great nation deserves great art; The Lee and Juliet Folger Fund; and The Mosaic Foundation (of Rita & Peter Heydon). The documentary and this site have also been designated a “We the People” project by the NEH as part of its initiative to advance American history and culture. In collaboration with Swim Design Consultants of Kensington, Maryland, who designed and developed the site, Folger Shakespeare Library launched this site on March 30, 2007. Garland Scott, head of external relations, led the website project for Folger Shakespeare Library. Funding for the site was obtained through the work of Essence Newhoff, director of major gifts. The many images of objects from the Folger collection were provided by the great efforts of Julie Ainsworth, head of photography and digital imaging. Esther Ferington, a freelance editor and writer, outlined and developed the site and was the principal content developer. Jane Martin, a freelance photo editor, researched, obtained, and negotiated use for the non-Folger images in this site.

Title: Folger Digital Texts

URL: https://shakespeare.folger.edu/

Collection: Folger Shakespeare Library Websites and Social Media

Description: Folger Digital Texts are free, high-quality digital texts of Shakespeare's plays start with the basics: superb source texts, meticulously edited on the basis of current scholarship. The plays in Folger Digital Texts are taken from the Folger Shakespeare Library editions, completed in 2010 by editors Barbara Mowat and Paul Werstine and published by Simon & Schuster. To these texts, we've added sophisticated coding that works behind the scenes to make the plays easy to read, search, and index—and lays the groundwork for new features in the future. We've also used the same page numbers and layouts as in the Folger print editions, so it's simple to use the two together. Our digital texts are also powerful scholarly tools in the fast-growing field of digital Shakespeare research. We encourage researchers and developers to download the coded texts at no cost for noncommercial purposes, including specialized studies and mobile apps.

Title: Shakespeare Quarterly

URL: https://shakespearequarterly.folger.edu/

Collection: Folger Shakespeare Library Websites and Social Media

Description: Shakespeare Quarterly (SQ) is a leading journal in Shakespeare studies, publishing highly original, rigorously researched essays, notes, and book reviews. Published for the Folger Shakespeare Library by Oxford University Press (OUP), SQ is peer-reviewed and extremely selective. The essays in our published pages span the field, including scholarship about new media and early modern race, textual and theater history, ecocritical and posthuman approaches, psychoanalytic and other theories, and archival and historicist work. Our mission, simply put, is to present the best scholarship on Shakespeare from his own period to the present moment. The published journal is available in print and online through OUP. Our archive is also available through JSTOR. Our website (sq.folger.edu) highlights and showcases the content of current and upcoming published issues of the journal. It hosts supplemental materials that will give you a more robust engagement with the essays in our issues. Additionally, it features lively web-exclusive content—short, informal essays from eminent Shakespeareans; discussions about essays and book reviews published in our pages; interviews with authors and performers; performance reviews; and Letters to the Editor. Other than Letters to the Editor, sq.folger.edu does not feature unsolicited material, and—as with newspapers or magazines—we do not promise to publish each letter that we receive (though we do hope to receive many). Web-exclusive content, including Letters to the Editor, will be archived so that you can come back to it again and again.
