Description: The open peer review of Shakespeare Quarterly’s new experimental feature, “After SAA.” Papers grouped under “Shakespeare and Philosophy,” “Shakespeare and Language,” and “Shakespeare and Skepticism” were first presented at the 2012 meeting of the Shakespeare Association of America. They appear here because they offer particular opportunities for further discussion within, and across, the boundaries of their hosting seminars. A fourth group of papers, under “Non-Shakespearean Drama and Performance,” marks SQ’s initiative of encouraging more work on drama other than Shakespeare’s. This open peer review and our subsequent “After SAA” issue of Shakespeare Quarterly will provide a place to continue the critical discussion that is the hallmark of the SAA seminar system, and to make the results of those conversations, and the communities that have formed around them, more freely and permanently available.

But even during his lifetime, his plays were able to reach far beyond the places we most associate with Shakespeare, like London's Globe Theatre or his hometown of Stratford-upon Avon. With his acting troupe the King’s Men, originally the Lord Chamberlain’s Men, William Shakespeare plays were heard around the country. So where did the Bard and his troupe go on tour? Description: The Cleveland Shakespeare Festival (2843 Washington Blvd, Cleveland, OH 44118) is a non-profit founded in 1998 by three local theater artists/students in the Master of Fine Arts program of the Theater and Dance Department at Case Western Reserve University. It is dedicated to bringing plays of professional quality to audiences in the Greater Cleveland area as a way of encouraging community through theater. By performing out of doors in numerous locations, they reach audience members that would be less likely to travel to a down town theater or may be uncomfortable in a more traditional theater setting. Making these performances available free of charge brings to those who could not ordinarily afford the price of a theater ticket the experience of audience and actor communing through the contemporary performance of classic literature.
