Title: Virginia Memory

URL: http://www.virginiamemory.com/

Collection: Virginia State Government Web Sites Collection

Description: Virginia Memory is part of the online presence of the Library of Virginia, the state archives and reference library at the seat of government for the Commonwealth of Virginia. Established in 1823, the Library maintains vast and varied collections of print materials, manuscripts, archival records, newspapers, photographs and ephemera, maps and atlases, rare books, and fine art that tell the history of the commonwealth and its people. Since the mid-1990s, the Library has digitized parts of the collections in an effort to make our materials more widely available to our online users. In 2006, the Library began reviewing its online presence and came to the conclusion that our traditional Web site could no longer deliver effectively our online content; promote our many services to educators, the public, and government employees; guide users through our collections; and accommodate new and exciting digital materials created by the archivists, librarians, educators, and historians on our staff. We realized that increasingly our users would visit us virtually, rather than physically, and their expectations for their online visits would be influenced by and change according to the Web technologies available on other sites they use every day for work, research, and entertainment. In 2007 and 2008, work began in earnest on the redesign of our agency site, as well as the creation of this offering, Virginia Memory. Virginia Memory has been designed as a gateway to the Library's digital collections, whether those items are indexed and delivered through traditional library systems, offered in online exhibitions, organized as resources for educators and students, or presented as research articles by staff who work with the collections on a daily basis.

Description: The Virginia Center for Behavioral Rehabilitation (VCBR) was created by the Virginia General Assembly's passage of legislation in 1999. The legislation was enacted in 2003 and the current facility was located in Dinwiddie County. Like other states, Virginia has sought to create a secure treatment facility for those sex offenders believed to present the greatest threat to the community. Inmates from the Department of Corrections who are within 10 months of completing their sentences, and who have been convicted of certain sexual crimes are subjected to a comprehensive screening process. This results in some individuals being civilly committed to VCBR to participate in intensive treatment. Eventual conditional release back into the community is determined by their progress in treatment and reduction of re-offense risk.

Description: The Virginia Assistive Technology System (VATS) is a statewide program authorized and funded by the Assistive Technology Act of 2004, as amended and administered by the Virginia Department for Aging and Rehabilitative Services. VATS was established in 1990 with commitment to increasing awareness, accessibility and acquisition of assistive technology. The program is guided by an Advisory Council composed of individuals with disabilities, family members and representatives from Virginia's disability service agencies. One of VATS priorities’ is to establish assistive technology recycling programs across the State. VATS will work with local groups to plan and implement AT recycling specific to each community. In 2009, VATS applied for and received a grant from the Commonwealth Neurotrauma Initiative (CNI) Trust Fund Board. The three-year grant which is administered by VATS, created the Virginia Reuse Network (VRN). The mission of the VRN is to build the statewide reuse program’s capacity to better serve Virginians with spinal cord injuries (SCI) and traumatic brain injuries (TBI), including Veterans, and to implement a state-of-the-art sanitization and processing program for DME through the purchase of innovative DME cleaning systems. VRN partner programs will work collaboratively with network affiliates and VATS to address the durable medical equipment (DME) needs of persons with disabilities, primarily those who do not have the resources necessary to purchase needed equipment. Although the VRN will continue to serve qualifying individuals with disabilities, the VRN is interested in improving service delivery and tracking reuse services provided to individuals with SCI and TBI. VATS has three Assistive Technology Regional Sites that provide community contact points throughout Virginia for assistive technology information and resources across designated regions. These Regional Sites provide training, public awareness, and general technical assistance for consumers who can benefit from the use of assistive technology.

Title: home | Teachingmoney

Collection: Virginia State Government Web Sites Collection

Description: Teaching MoneyVA.org was created in 2011 to help Virginia’s high school teachers find quality resources that they can use in teaching Virginia’s new economics and personal finance course. Background on Virginia’s Economics and Personal Finance Requirement In February 2009, the Virginia Board of Education adopted revisions to the Regulations Establishing Standards for Accrediting Public Schools in Virginia (8 VAC 20-131-5 et seq). Included in these revisions were changes to graduation requirements effective with the ninth-grade class of 2010-2011. One of the changes is the addition of a one-credit requirement in economics and personal finance as a condition to graduate from high school (except those earning a Modified Standard Diploma). The implementation of these new graduation requirements was delayed one year by the General Assembly in 2010 and becomes effective for the students who enter the ninth grade in the 2011-12 school year. The Economics and Personal Finance Standards of Learning, adopted by the Board of Education, and accompanying Curriculum Frameworks provide the foundation for the content of this course. School divisions have the authority to determine whether the course is taught as a one-credit course in economics and personal finance, as two half-credit courses – one each in economics and personal finance, or a combination of both. School divisions may also determine at which grade level(s) high school students will take the course. TeachingMoneyVA.org uses the Resource Criteria as a guide in selecting the curriculum resources to be included in this database. All submissions are reviewed by the Review Team. Inclusion in the database does not constitute endorsement of the materials, and resource providers may not use this inclusion to imply approval or endorsement. All submissions are accepted at the sole discretion of the TeachingMoneyVA.org Review Team. We reserve the right to decline a submission for any reason and do not comment on unsuccessful submissions.
