Description:
On May 19, 2021, NC Policy Watch published a special report revealing that journalist Nikole Hannah-Jones would no longer be offered a tenured position as the Knight Chair in Race and Investigative Journalism with the UNC-Chapel Hill Hussman School of Journalism and Media. Instead, the article noted that Hannah-Jones would be offered the position on a five-year contract as the UNC Board of Trustees had not taken action to approve the tenure recommendation. Over the next several weeks, students, staff and faculty, as well as individuals not affiliated with UNC, released statements in support of tenure for Hannah-Jones. Protests were held at Board of Trustees’ meetings demanding the Board vote on the tenure case. Speculation that UNC donor Walter Hussman Jr. and conservative legislators sought to deny tenure because of Hannah-Jones’ 1619 Project was a focal point of the debate. Ultimately, in June 2021, the Board of Trustees voted to grant tenure to Hannah-Jones. Hannah-Jones declined the offer in July 2021.
