Description: It's been clear for a long time that First Nations children at residential schools in Canada suffered from terrible mistreatment, starvation, and neglect. In the summer of 2013, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which as created to uncover all the facts about what happened at the schools and hear testimony from the survivors, reported that the children at the schools were used as medical test subjects in the 1940s and 1950s. Those schools, by the way, were run by churches.

Her mother attended a day school, similar to residential school, but kids went home after class was done. Description: Wednesday, June 11, 2008, the Prime Minister of Canada made a formal apology for the treatment of Aboriginal people in the residential schools system. The Manitoba government saw this apology as an opportunity to further the dialogue about residential schools and expand citizens' awareness of what happened. This project is intended to encourage discussion and make progress on the path toward healing and reconciliation by providing Manitoba teachers and students with culturally appropriate resources regarding the treatment of Aboriginal people in the residential schools system.

Description: Theodore "Ted" Fontaine stands a little bent. It's his hip. He leans into the well of a big window of his long-ago classroom at the Assiniboia Indian Residential School. Winnipeggers may not have heard of it. They cannot see it, even though the building stands limestone-sturdy; it's hidden by newer buildings where Academy Road meets Route 90. Through spattering rain, he looks onto the backyards of tidy little houses on Wellington Crescent South. The people who lived there have all likely moved on, says Fontaine, 73.

Description: Reconciling will be difficult as long as indigenous people are mired in poverty, illness and violence, said the First Nations elder who kicked off Winnipeg’s Truth and Reconciliation events. Margaret Lavalee, a residential school survivor herself, said she was speaking with elders yesterday in her home reserve of Sagkeeng First Nation and they questioned whether it’s up to First Nations, who welcomed colonial settlers to Canada with friendship, to now reconcile.

Many young, Aboriginal people were moving to urban centres, there was greater influence of media and English-speaking culture and, the generations who were most fluent in traditional languages were aging.
