McKinney began his career as an activist in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgendered (LGBT) community during the 1960s while still a student in Coffeyville. After college McKinney continued his activism in the community and began his archive, collecting items of significance related to the LGBT community both in and outside of Kansas. This collection reflects McKinney's involvement in the community as an activist and an archivist. It includes McKinney's personal notebooks, organization papers, newspaper and magazine serials, posters, and other memorabilia. It also contains the papers of both Rob Gutzman and Steve Wheeler, whose papers were donated to McKinney's archive posthumously.

Description: The WCPI consists of reproductions of more than 70,000 images related to the history of Western Canada, gathered over nearly three decades. It began as a centennial project in 1970 under the direction of local journalist Eric Wells and Thora Cooke. Wells and Cooke appealed to archives, museums and the public to provide pictures of the province’s past for an exhibit which was displayed at the Central Canadian Exhibition, and then toured around schools and fairs in the province. When Wells and Cooke needed a home for the Index, the University of Winnipeg offered space and some expertise, and the Index came to live here. In the early 1990s a decision was taken to move the project off campus, and the Index found a new home in the Exchange District under the direction of a new Board. In 2005, the University of Winnipeg agreed to move the Index back to campus under the management of the Library. The Index consists of slides and contact sheets and does not include any original negatives or prints. Collecting practices for images in the Index varied throughout its development, with the primary source of images being other archives, museums and historical societies. Another significant percentage of images came from families, companies and other forms of private donation.

Description: It's been clear for a long time that First Nations children at residential schools in Canada suffered from terrible mistreatment, starvation, and neglect. In the summer of 2013, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, which as created to uncover all the facts about what happened at the schools and hear testimony from the survivors, reported that the children at the schools were used as medical test subjects in the 1940s and 1950s. Those schools, by the way, were run by churches.

Description: This week questions arose on our campus regarding the role of Indigenous spirituality at our institution, specifically concerning a pipe ceremony. An elder, who is also an academic, requested that women wear skirts, and another elder requested that the prayer not be photographed by media. We view this as a learning opportunity for everyone at The University of Winnipeg, one that is particularly poignant given the recent tabling of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) executive summary report.
