URL: http://www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/exhibits/carr/

Collection: University of Delaware Special Collections Online Exhibitions and Finding Aids

Description: Virginia Spencer Carr, the noted literary biographer whose papers are held by the University of Delaware Library, died on April 10, 2012, at her home in Lynn, Massachusetts. Carr’s award-winning 1975 biography of Carson McCullers, the darkly Southern writer of novels and stories featuring memorably isolated characters, was meticulously researched and remains the standard biography of McCullers. Carr published two additional comprehensive biographies, Dos Passos: A Life (1984) and Paul Bowles: A Life (2004), and other critical works about McCullers, Katherine Anne Porter, and Eudora Welty. This small exhibition presents the biographer’s work, €”manuscripts, correspondence, research ephemera, publishing proofs, and publicity. This single case exhibition was on display in the Information Room on the first floor of Morris Library from May 10-June 30, 2012.

Title: Little Known Histories of Newark, Delaware, 1758-2008: An Exhibition

URL: http://www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/exhibits/newark/

Collection: University of Delaware Special Collections Online Exhibitions and Finding Aids

Description: arose from the crossroads of two Lenni Lenape Indian trails which spanned the peninsula between the Chesapeake Bay and the Delaware River, and connected the lower peninsula with the northern hills of later-day Pennsylvania. As Europeans - mainly English, Welsh, and Scots-Irish - came to the area in the early eighteenth century, the same intersecting crossroads gradually matured into a village, with brickyards, mills, and tanneries developing in the vicinity. Newark was first chartered on April 13, 1758, by King George II of England, when he granted permission for the growing village to hold a weekly market and a semi-annual fair. Though still considered a small town in 2008 with a permanent population under 30,000, Newark's history of growth and change since 1758 is a reflection of significant developments in the history of many American cities over the last 250 years. The curators of this exhibition have selected several hundred items to illustrate Newark's history. This exhibition was on display in the Special Collections Gallery February 19-June 20, 2008.

Title: Self Works: Diaries, Scrapbooks, and other Autobiographical Efforts

URL: http://www.lib.udel.edu/ud/spec/exhibits/selfwork/index.htm

Collection: University of Delaware Special Collections Online Exhibitions and Finding Aids

Description: This exhibit features self-consciously created autobiographies or memoirs in which individuals explore life meaning or historical context, as well as private diaries and journals in which authors unintentionally bestow rich personal texture to the fabric of history. Even pocket diaries and desk calendars which primarily serve to organize passing life details reveal useful information. Scrapbooks and other artistic self works also reward the researcher with evidence of creative self-expression. Diaries, journals, personal scrapbooks, travel narratives, autobiographies, memoirs, and reminiscences convey the personal experiences of ordinary men, women, and children who did not merit even a footnote in the official chronicles of history. Broadly called "life writing," these works help document much that previously was concealed from the standard record of human experience. This exhibition was on display in the Special Collections Gallery from August 19-December 18, 1997.
